Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The purpose of the horizon league is to provide member institutions with an organization to maintain intercollegiate athletics in conformity with the dignity and high purpose of the membership. Members of the league regard competitive athletics as a valuable educational experience.

Major Activities

Activity 2
The student assistance fund (saf) provides financial assistance to all student athletes in our (10) member schools. Saf is an ongoing program, funded through ncaa grants, with the objective of assisting student athletes in personal and academic areas. Types of assistance include: tuition assistance (for summer school and fifth or sixth year); academic tutoring; assistance with medical and dental expenses; clothing allowances and assistance with travel for family emergencies. The saf helps 2,400 students annually.
Activity 3
The horizon league produces video streaming of league activities. Video productions can be accessed via our website www.horizonleaguenetwork.tv (hln). The purpose of hln is to enhance the student-athlete experience and to provide increased exposure for our member schools. In the past fiscal year, over 400 sporting events have been shown on hln, including 9 league championships. Hln reached an audience of 233,000 viewers in 2011-12. Content on the website informs, educates and enhances our student-athletes' experiences. The league also has agreements with local television in member schools' markets for tv production and airing of athletic events.
