Alzheimers/gerontology programin 1954 sigma kappa became the first sorority to recognize the need for continued comprehensive work on the study of aging and the needs of the elderly population. In 1984 sigma kappa responded to an increasingly critical problem facing older americans by adding an emphasis on alzheimer's disease to its gerontology program. Through this foundation program, sigma kappa has become one of the nation's leading contributors to alzheimer's disease prevention, research, and treatment efforts. No grants or allocations are or include foreign grants.since the inception of the foundation's alzheimer's disease research grant program in 1988, the sigma kappa foundation has granted more than one million dollars in research and psychosocial grants to investigators and practitioners who are on the front lines in the fight against this debilitating disease. Awarding research grants is only one aspect of the foundation's commitment to eliminate alzheimer's disease. Educating sigma kappa members is also a priority. All chapters have access to educational materials and programs about alzheimer's disease and the impact sigma kappa members have had in the continuing struggle to find a cure.alzheimer's disease research grant - in 2000 the sigma kappa foundation pledged to provide $240,000 in funding for research grants to the alzheimer's disease and related disorders association over a five year period. The national alzheimer's association selects scientific research proposals for sponsorship by the foundation, ensuring that gifts are utilized most effectively. Thanks to the efforts of sigma kappa members and friends, the foundation is doing its part to create a world without alzheimer's disease.foundation gerontology service award - in recognition of our philanthropic commitment to gerontology service, alumnae chapters are honored for an outstanding community philanthropic project which reflects sigma kappa's interest in alzheimer's disease and gerontology as exhibited in volunteer hours and/or funds provided, which involves a significant number of the membership and generates positive public relations within the community as evidenced by submission of published articles or pictures. A contribution in the amount of $500 ($25 for honorable mention), funded by the sigma kappa foundation, is presented by the alumnae chapter or club to a 501(c)(3) facility or organization providing care, service, or funding to alzheimer's or gerontology clients.

Activity 3

Educational and leadership programmingthrough activities that encompass the individual chapter, the greek community, the university community, and society in general, the sigma kappa foundation provides funding for programs and resources designed to promote personal and leadership development. Grants are made pursuant to appropriate grant documentation. No grants or allocations are or include foreign grants.sigma kappa educational grant the grant for the leadership consultant program is used to conduct the individual and group counseling of chapter members and the training of individuals to do such counseling. Group counseling includes workshops and lectures on leadership and development, assertiveness training, achievement of high scholastic attainment, citizenship, career development, alcohol and drug abuse prevention and advanced leadership training for selected individuals. Individual counseling includes one-on-one sessions with selected undergraduate chapter members of the sorority regarding leadership opportunities and scholarship and study techniques, and in addition each consultant should be available to advise any chapter member seeking individualized counseling regarding educational opportunities and problems. Sigma kappa convention grantto conduct educational and leadership activities at the sorority's biennial national convention. Such activities include the conduct of workshops and seminars in the areas of service to our community & profession, service to our members, and ritual the right way. These focus areas include workshops on business etiquette, building confidence, ultra-violet campaign, developing courage, standards of excellence, team building, leadership development, finance, housing related topics, and advanced leadership training for chapter members, advisors, corporation board/property committee members, and national officers.charitable contributions - in recognition of the fact that other 501(c)(3) organizations have charitable goals and programs congruent with those of the sigma kappa foundation, the board of trustees reviews various requests from 501(c)(3) organizations and evaluates the merit of such requests to determine if a charitable contribution would fulfill the educational and charitable mission of the sigma kappa foundation.
