Mission

The southside spca is a donor-supported organization that provides shelter, medical treatment, spay/neuter, and adoption services to over 36,000 puppies, kittens, cats, and dogs since 1975. The organization is a no-kill shelter operating almost entirely with volunteers and serves twelve largely rural, economically depressed counties.

IRS990/Desc0The Southside SPCA is a no-kill animal welfare organization managed and operated almost entirely by volunteers. Our paid staff consists mostly of hourly workers who care for an average of 70-80 animals each day at our shelter in Meherrin, Virginia. We rescue homeless, abandoned and abused animals in our 12-county south-central Virginia service area, provide the animals we rescue with food and shelter, medical care (including spay/neuter), and adopt them into good homes. We also engage in outreach to educate and inform residents in our service area about animal welfare issues, the importance of spay/neuter, and the availability of spay/neuter services in our area, including our low and no cost spay/neuter program for pet owners.
