“In 2021, reaching heights continued its work connecting the community to the chuh city schools with programs that enrich students and support teachers. The year began with a renewed commitment to work on anti-racism in every aspect of reaching heights efforts with personal training encouraged and short burst of training at every board meeting. Darryl rugley, owner of goodfellas bbq was named outstanding community partner, and joan drushel, a devoted parent volunteer received the friend of public education award. In-school programming began again including many villages tutoring in elementary schools and, role model speakers in elementary and middle school classroom. The ch-uh parent mentor reached out to support families of children with disabilities and gathered parents virtually in the exceptional childrens advocacy group to offer resources and guidance. The reaching heights community spelling bee, the largest annual fundraising event took place online for a second year. And although there was no summer music camp, the patti-jackson music lesson scholarships continued throughout the year. Heights middle school shorts is a three-week mixed-media film arts camp for cleveland heights-university heights middle school students. In 2022, the camp will be held during the months of may and june. Guided by local professionals experienced in filmmaking, writing, acting, music, and facilitating youth creative expression, campers learn storytelling through the medium of film as they write short stories that they turn into short films containing short musical scores. Each camper that completes the camp will write, direct, and produce their own individual movie.”
