IT ALSO HELPS GIRLS RECOGNIZE OPPORTUNITIES THEY MAY NOT HAVE CONSIDERED AND HOW THE DECISIONS THEY MAKE NOW CAN AFFECT THEIR LONG TERM, FINANCIAL WELL-BEING. ROSIE'S GIRLS IS A NATIONALLY-LICENSED CURRICULUM CREATED AND OWNED BY VERMONT WORKS FOR WOMEN. HARD HATTED WOMEN WAS THE FIRST TO BRING THIS INNOVATIVE THREE-WEEK SUMMER DAY CAMP TO OHIO, SERVING GIRLS IN THE CITY OF CLEVELAND. THE PROGRAM IS A THREE-WEEK TRADES EXPLORATION CAMP FOR GIRLS ENTERING THE 6TH-8TH GRADES DESIGNED TO BUILD SELF-ESTEEM, PERSEVERANCE, AND LEADERSHIP THROUGH LEARNING AND APPLYING BASIC SKILLS IN CARPENTRY AND OTHER TRADES, PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES,AND CREATIVE ARTS. GIRLS ARE CHALLENGED TO DEVELOP NEW AREAS OF CONFIDENCE,EXPAND THEIR MATH AND SCIENCE SKILLS THROUGH CONCRETE APPLICATIONS, AND PUSH PAST PRECONCEIVED LIMITATIONS. BASED ON THE EXPERIENCE OF CONDUCTING ROSIE'S GIRLS SINCE 2005, HARD HATTED WOMEN HAS ALSO ESTABLISHED A ROSIE'S GIRLS ALUMNAE CLUB. THE MAJORITY OF GIRLS WHO HAVE ATTENDED ROSIE'S GIRLS CAMPS RUN BY HHW HAVE BEEN FROM LOW-INCOME NEIGHBORHOODS WHERE SUBSTANCE ABUSE, VIOLENCE, AND TEENAGE PREGNANCY ARE DAILY REALITIES. IN RESPONSE, HHW IS DEVELOPING STRATEGIES TARGETED TO SPECIFIC SECTORS. THIS WORK INCLUDES TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO EMPLOYERS AND TRAINING PROVIDERS, PUBLIC POLICY MONITORING AND ADVOCACY, AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF CURRICULUM IN PARTNERSHIP WITH EMPLOYERS. HHW HAS HAD PARTICULAR SUCCESS IN THE ENERGY AND CONSTRUCTION SECTORS. THE CENTER FOR ENERGY WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT (CEWD), A NATIONAL EMPLOYER GROUP, HAS ASKED HHW TO SERVE AS A PIPELINE ORGANIZATION FOR ITS EIGHT-STATE CAREER PATHWAYS PILOT, GET INTO ENERGY. CEWD HAS PARTNERED WITH THE ASSOCIATION OF GENERAL CONTRACTORS (AGC) AND THE MANUFACTURING INSTITUTE TO CREATE A SET OF CORE SKILL ASSESSMENTS AND TRAINING THAT LEAD TO CERTIFICATES AND COMPETENCIES THAT ARE EASILY TRANSFERABLE TO ANY OF THE THREE INDUSTRY SECTORS. IN JULY 2007, HARD HATTED WOMEN BROUGHT TOGETHER REGISTERED APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMS, CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTORS, THE OHIO DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION, AND OTHER COMMUNITY AND INDUSTRY PARTNERS TO LAUNCH THE WOMEN IN OHIO ROADWAYS CONSTRUCTION CONSORTIUM (WORCC). THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF WOMEN ENTERING REGISTERED APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMS AND PRE-APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING, THUS HELPING OHIO'S APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMS AND CONTRACTORS BETTER MEET THEIR REQUIREMENTS UNDER FEDERALLY-FINANCED CONTRACTS. BETWEEN JULY 2007 AND DECEMBER 2010, 366 WOMEN ENTERED INTO PRE-APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING PROGRAMS (PATS) AND 144 ENTER REGISTERED APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMS UNDER THIS PROJECT. HHW ALSO WORKS WITH NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS WHO SHARE OUR PASSION FOR INCREASING THE NUMBER OF WOMEN IN HIGH-SKILL, HIGH-WAGE CAREERS. THE PROGRAM IS A THREE-WEEK TRADES EXPLORATION CAMP FOR GIRLS ENTERING THE 6TH-8TH GRADES DESIGNED TO BUILD SELF-ESTEEM, PERSEVERANCE, AND LEADERSHIP THROUGH LEARNING AND APPLYING BASIC SKILLS IN CARPENTRY AND OTHER TRADES, PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES,AND CREATIVE ARTS. GIRLS ARE CHALLENGED TO DEVELOP NEW AREAS OF CONFIDENCE,EXPAND THEIR MATH AND SCIENCE SKILLS THROUGH CONCRETE APPLICATIONS, AND PUSH PAST PRECONCEIVED LIMITATIONS. BASED ON THE EXPERIENCE OF CONDUCTING ROSIE'S GIRLS SINCE 2005, HARD HATTED WOMEN HAS ALSO ESTABLISHED A ROSIE'S GIRLS ALUMNAE CLUB. THE MAJORITY OF GIRLS WHO HAVE ATTENDED ROSIE'S GIRLS CAMPS RUN BY HHW HAVE BEEN FROM LOW-INCOME NEIGHBORHOODS WHERE SUBSTANCE ABUSE, VIOLENCE, AND TEENAGE PREGNANCY ARE DAILY REALITIES. THE PRIMARY PURPOSE OF THIS CLUB IS TO HAVE A STRONG SUPPORT SYSTEM IN PLACE FOR THE GIRLS WHO HAVE PARTICIPATED IN THE PROGRAM AS THEY ENTER HIGH SCHOOL AND BEGIN EXERCISING MORE DECISION-MAKING ABOUT THEIR COURSE, CAREER GOALS, AND LIVES. |

IN JULY 2007, HARD HATTED WOMEN BROUGHT TOGETHER REGISTERED APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMS, CONSTRUCTION CONTRACTORS, THE OHIO DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION, AND OTHER COMMUNITY AND INDUSTRY PARTNERS TO LAUNCH THE WOMEN IN OHIO ROADWAYS CONSTRUCTION CONSORTIUM (WORCC). THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF WOMEN ENTERING REGISTERED APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMS AND PRE-APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING, THUS HELPING OHIO'S APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMS AND CONTRACTORS BETTER MEET THEIR REQUIREMENTS UNDER FEDERALLY-FINANCED CONTRACTS. BETWEEN JULY 2007 AND DECEMBER 2010, 366 WOMEN ENTERED INTO PRE-APPRENTICESHIP TRAINING PROGRAMS (PATS) AND 144 ENTER REGISTERED APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMS UNDER THIS PROJECT. HHW ALSO WORKS WITH NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS WHO SHARE OUR PASSION FOR INCREASING THE NUMBER OF WOMEN IN HIGH-SKILL, HIGH-WAGE CAREERS. IN 2010, HHW PROVIDED EXPERTISE TO WORKFORCE PROGRAMS RUN BY YWCAS IN WARREN, YOUNGTOWN, AND CINCINNATI. HHW ALSO HOLDS A CONTRACT WITH THE OHIO DEPARTMENT OF REHABILITATION AND CORRECTION TO HELP WOMEN BEING RELEASED FROM THE MARYSVILLE PENITENTIARY FIND WORK IN CONSTRUCTION. |
