Additional Explanations

Form 990, Part III, Line 4D: Other Program Services Description

OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: Renew Counseling and Recovery Center specialized in treating domestic violence, trauma experiences, and alcohol/drug addictions. All staff members were licensed and credentialed and provided treatment to adults and children. All staff members were trained in trauma-informed care and provided evidence-based treatment approaches. Renew was CARF accredited and certified for both substance abuse and mental health treatment by the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services. Due to behavioral healthcare and Medicaid billing redesign in Ohio, this program was closed April 30, 2018. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: Legal Advocacy Support Services provides justice systems advocacy and support for victims of domestic violence. Clients are assisted through the court process and given safety planning and information about community resources, crime victims compensation, and the Ohio victim information notification network (VINE). Legal advocates help victims navigate civil and criminal courts and assist them in understanding legal rights, attending court hearings, filing criminal protection orders, speaking with the prosecutors and police, and reinforce safety planning with shelter residents as well as with clients who access services exclusively through the courts. During the fiscal year, 1,282 clients were served by legal advocacy staff. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: The Transitional Housing program releases families from housing concerns, giving adequate time to rebuild lives, transition into permanent housing, and integrate into a community. Eight to ten adult clients, along with their children, can be supported in housing of their choice for a period of six months to two years, allowing victims of domestic violence or sexual abuse the opportunity to heal and move towards self-sufficiency. Support includes rent and utility payments along with case management during the transitional housing period. 12 adults and 21 children were supported this fiscal year, with a total of 82 months of rent subsidized. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 7: The Victim Services program started in February, 2017. This program includes medical advocacy for victims undergoing a forensic nursing exam in a hospital setting (trauma-informed crisis intervention with an emphasis on safety planning and resource education), and outreach and aftercare services to clients leaving other programs of the agency, to ensure those clients have the resources and safety planning needed to be successful in life after other DVPI programming. During the fiscal year, 163 clients were served in Outreach and Aftercare, and 59 clients were served through Medical Advocacy.

Donated Services and Materials

During the fiscal year, the Agency received donations of items for the fundraisers conducted by the Agency. The estimated fair value of these donations amounted to $25,079, and is not reflected in the Agency's audited financial statements or tax return since the criteria for recognition of such items has not been satisifed as required by the Accounting for Contributions Received and Contributions Made topic of the FASB Accounting Standards Codification.

Volunteers

The 4,883 volunteer hours given to Domestic Violence Project, Inc. by the volunteers included duties such as assistance with fundraising, shelter support, yard work, building maintenance, provision of client holiday gifts and parties, service on the board and board committees, pro bono services, and clerical duties. These hours are valued by the Organization to be worth approximately $39,796.

Financial Statement Notes

Part V, Line 4: Intended uses of the endowment fund.

The income from these endowment funds will be used for the needs of the Agency at the discretion of the Board of Trustees.

Part X : FIN48 Footnote

Effective January 1, 2009, generally accepted accounting principles require the organization to evaluate the level of uncertainty related to whether tax positions taken will be sustained upon examination. Any positions taken that do not meet the more-likely-than-not threshold must be quantified and recorded as a liability for unrecognized tax benefits in the accompanying balance sheet along with any associated interest and penalties that would be payable to the taxing authorities upon examination. Interest and penalties associated with unrecognized tax benefits would be classified as additional income taxes in the statement of income. The organization believes that none of the tax positions taken would materially impact the financial statements and no such liabilities have been recorded.
