Activity 2

Family services includes emergency assistance, distribution, representative, payeeship services and financial literacy. Emergency assistance provides assistance with rent, utilities, food, prescription medications, and other critical needs that an individual or family may have. Distribution services include a distribution site which provides clothing, toiletries, and household items for those who are unable to afford these basic necessities. County-wide collaboration provides for school supplies at the beginning of each school year as well as a Christmas distribution program, HALO, which serves over 5,000 individuals with food and/or toys. Representative payeeship provides for a caseworker to become a payee for mentally disabled adults who cannot manage their finances. The caseworker ensures that basic shelter, food and clothing needs are met, appropriate benefits are accessed; thus providing stability to those who are vulnerable to exploitation. Financial literacy provides both individualized and group sessions to educate consumers on budgeting, money management, avoiding predatory lenders/scams, and wise use of credit.

Activity 3

The guardianship services utilize staff and trained volunteers to serve as legal guardians to the indigent, frail elderly who have no suitable family or friends to assist them. The Probate Court appoints legal guardians after an investigation and hearing, where a person will have been found incapable of managing his/her own affairs.
