We are a nonpartisan, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that reveals the influence of money in politics, informs and empowers voters, and advances reforms that promote a more responsive democracy.

MapLights online tools and research bring transparency to government data and put a spotlight on the outsize influence of money in politics so that journalists and advocacy groups can hold lawmakers accountable.

Our groundbreaking transparency website combines campaign contribution data with legislative votes, providing citizens and journalists with the transparency tools to hold politicians accountable. Since 2009, our findings illustrating the impact of political money on the issues affecting citizens everyday lives have reached over 350 million people through TV, radio, magazines, newspapers, blogs, and other websites. In the last year alone, our data was central to a number of groundbreaking stories in major news outlets, including exposs on the pharmaceutical and insurance industry money behind an Obamacare replacement bill, efforts by dark money groups to battle environmental regulations, telephone and cable industry money behind attempts to allow internet service providers to sell customer information, and more. In June, we expanded our work to assist democracy reform efforts in cities and states around the country, using MapLights data-driven approach to money in politics research to improve political processes at every level of government. We also continued our partnership with the California Secretary of State to build the user-friendly Quick Guide to Props, helping Californians uncover the money behind the 17 propositions on the November 2016 ballot.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0MapLights groundbreaking online voter guide, Voters Edge, provides nonpartisan information about candidates and ballot measures in local, state, and federal elections. Voters Edge has been proven to increase voter confidence and voter participation in the electoral process by effectively equipping voters with the information they need to vote in ways that reflect their own interests. For the 2016 elections, MapLight expanded our successful California pilot to Illinois and New York, providing even more Americans with meaningful information on every race on their individual ballots. We also made continuing improvements to the usability and accessibility of the site, including the addition of a professionally translated Spanish-language site and a feature called "My List" that lets users save their ballot choices for later, as well as offering co-branded Voters Edge websites for media outlets and other partners to increase distribution. Voter's Edge was used by over 1.9 million people during the 2016 primary and general elections. Nearly three out of four users who responded to our survey (74%) reported that they would vote for more offices and leave fewer choices blank because of information they found on the site.
