Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 11

The finance committee is presented with the finanical statements and the form 990. Upon review of these documents with the accountants, they are then presented to the board by paper and electronically for review and discussions. Once the documents are approved by the board they are then submitted to the taxing authorities.

Form 990, Part VI, Section B, Line 12C

Trustees are expected to identify any potential conflicts of interest at the annual board retreat, held each fall, at which time they also execute the conflict of interest disclosure. Potential conflicts that may arise subsequent to the annual board retreat are identified by involved trustees at interim board meetings. Potential conflicts may also be identified by the board president, who is also a member of the academys administration. All conflicts of interest (or potential conflicts) are reviewed at the annual board retreat or at regular interim board meetings. Reviews are conducted by the entire body of trustees and appropriate actions are taken. Depending upon the nature and duration of the conflict of interest, the board may recommend a trustee resign his/her position, eliminate the circumstances of the conflict, recuse himself/herself from discussions and decisions concerning the matter under conflict; or, if the conflict is considered immaterial or beneficial to the academy the board will adopt a resolution acknowledging the potential conflict and allowing the involved trustee(s) to continue their service on the board. All board discussions regarding conflicts of interest are recorded in the appropriate board meeting minutes.

Form 990, Part VI, Section C, Line 19

The school's form 990 is available for public inspection as required under section 6104 of the internal revenue code. The return is posted on guidestar.org and other similar types of websites. In addition, the financial statements, governing documents and conflict of interest policy are also available upon written request at 104 saint mark's place, new york, ny 10025.

Form 990, Part I, Line 1

To educate academically talented students in grades four to eight from disadvantaged economic backgrounds by the establishment, operations, maintenance and support of a private school in the lasallian tradition which will provide a comprehensive academic and extracurricular program with the mission statement.

Form 990, Part III, Line 1

George jackson academy is an independent, nonsectarian upper elementary and middle school for academically capable boys from lower-income and underserved families. The school was created to engage boys from 4th to 8th grade, a time when young men are particularly vulnerable to disengaging from school. Like partner school de la salle academy, george jackson academy creates a life-changing experience by challenging its students to grow as scholars, friends, and brothers in community.

Form 990, Part XII, Line 2C

The purpose of the audit committee is to assist the board of trustees in its oversight responsibilities respecting (1) the audit of the academy's books and records and (2) the academy's system of internal control. This process has not changed since last year.

Financial Statement Notes

PART V, LINE 4:

The academy has adopted investment and spending policies for endowment assets that attempt to provide a predictable stream of funding to the academy by its endowment while seeking to maintain the purchasing power of the endowment assets. The purpose of the endowment funds are to fund future scholarships.

PART X, LINE 2:

The academy recognizes the effect of income tax positions only if those positions are more likely than not to be sustained. Management has determined that the academy had no uncertain tax positions that would require financial statement recognition or disclosure. The academy is no longer subject to examinations by the applicable taxing jurisdictions for periods prior to 2012.

PART XI, LINE 4B - OTHER ADJUSTMENTS:
