Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Develop sustainable no-kill companion animal communities.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Benefactor Program - The third Benefactor Program ended its cycle in this period (part of 2009 Fur Ball funding) with $16,106 distributed between two organizations. These funds, along with the $8,053 distributed at the end of 2010 underwrote over 182 spay neuter surgeries, 149 microchips, and 53 feline FIV tests, as well as aiding in veterinary care. In addition, the final installment of $8,401 was distributed from the second Benefactor Program; this money underwrote 227 spay neuter surgeries.
Activity 3
High Volume Spay Neuter Clinic - Dugan Foundation continued efforts to design and build a high volume spay/neuter clinic in Pierce County. The Foundation has continued its efforts to collaborate with Washington State University School of Veterinary Medicine, local professional firms, and veterinarians. The High Volume Spay Neuter Clinic will provide spay neuter surgeries to companion animals and free roaming cats serving shelters, rescues and the community with a capacity of 20,000 surgeries per year. The City Council for the City of Tacoma granted a long-term, low cost lease for the land this year. This lease is contingent on the foundation building and maintaining an off-leash dog park on part of this land, and the foundation receiving capital funding and beginning construction (by a specified date) for the Spay Neuter Clinic. If these hurdles are not achieved, the land will revert to the City of Tacoma, with no other penalties. Expenses for this program were lodging and food for the architectural team, and our President, to meet with operating partner, Washington State University, Veterinary School of Medicine, at the WSU campus. The primary expense for this program ($15,993)was architectural services provided pro-bono by BLRB Architects; and additional $380 for lodging the architects, contractor and our President, to meet with operating partner, Washington State University, Veterinary School of Medicine, at the WSU campus. Another $480 was spent on a video and presentation boards for presentation to potential endowing partners.

IRS990/Description0Happy Howlidays - is an animal welfare program designed to gather food, blankets, beds and other pet supplies from local businesses and citizens to be distributed to animal welfare organizations serving Washington's pet population. The mission of this community program is to improve conditions for homeless animals in transition, as well improving the lives of animals that are in the care of citizens that need help. This fifth run of the annual event experienced a renewed vigor, with donation numbers rivaling that of boom years. We conservatively chose four organization based on 2009's meager response. We increased donation sites from 33 to over 50, and collected over 10,000 pounds of food, countless pet treats, toys, beds and more. The cash value of the donations are estimated at $20,000 in food and supplies. Additional cash donations of $1,894 were received, but not distributed until after the end of the fiscal period. In-kind assistance of $5,150 in addition to the food donations, allowed this program to run so inexpensively.

OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: Woofstock - This was the fourth year for a signature event designed to provide an annual venue for adoption of companion animals in a festival atmosphere with music and activities. This event is free to the public and attracted approximately 500 people. Over twenty vendors sold pet related merchandise and services to pet owners while twenty-three rescue groups and non-profits came from around the state, with cats, dogs, ferrets, and bunnies for adoption. The result was 121 animals getting new homes in six hours of the festival, this was up from 115 in the previous year. The net proceeds from the event, raised from sponsors, donors and vendor fees, were granted out in three $500 grants, to qualifying adoption groups that participated in Woofstock. $633 was retained to help underwrite 2011 Woofstock. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: Other miscellaneous - Redirect of Fund an Item, funds from 2009 Fur Ball were originally slated for Mobile Spay Neuter Project, however that program did not have enough revenue to continue so with the approval of the donors, funds are being redirected to various spay neuter programs serving Pierce County. In 2010, $4,000 was distributed between two programs. $2,000 was given to Feral Cat Spay Neuter Project to spay and neuter free roaming cats in our county; and another $2,000 was directed to spay neuter Bully Breed Dogs in the area through Pawsitive Alliance and their Fix A Bull/Adopt a Bull programs. A balance of $5,116 is reserved for 2011 to continue funding spay neuter efforts. An additional $1,000 was awarded to Orting Food Bank for their Seniors with Pets Assistance Program; and $1,366 was given through Project Homeless Connect, providing vaccinations, spay neuter services and flea treatments to the pets of the homeless in Pierce County.
