Mission

Playwrights Projects mission is to advance literacy, creativity, and communication by empowering individuals to voice their stories through playwriting programs and theatre productions conducted through San Diego County. Programs serve individuals of all backgrounds, including underserved populations foster youth, seniors, immigrants, incarcerated.

Resulting scripts are performed by actors at community centers and theatres. Participants exercise creativity, advance critical thinking, and honor the wisdom gained from personal experience.

Student writers competed for a professional production of their script in PBYW and those who requested feedback received script critiques. Four winners from the prior years contest had plays professionally produced in Plays by Young Writers.

Four plays by writers age 17 to 18 were fully produced, and one play by writers age 13 was a staged reading. 2 performances were conducted for school groups 579 youth and 65 adults attended 1 public at the Salvation Armys Kroc Theatre 27 youth and 119 adults attended, and 1 Lights Up event 44 participants.
