The Foundation is exempt from income taxes under the current provisions of the Internal Revenue Code Section 501(c)(3) and Section 23701(d) of the California Franchise Tax Code. All tax-exempt entities are subject to review and audit by federal, state and other applicable agencies. Such agencies may review the taxability of unrelated business income, or the qualification of the tax-exempt entity under the Internal Revenue Code and applicable state statutes. The Sol Price Retailing/Service Scholarship program benefits the San Diego community by giving educational opportunities to students attending City College, Thus furthering the mission of the San Diego Foundation.Price Scholars receive assistance to fulfill their educational goals. Such assistance includes financial assistance, academic assistance, and individual counseling. In exchange for this assistance, Price Scholars are required to perform 200 to 300 hours of community service or internships in the community each year they are enrolled in the program.The Price Scholarship Program helps prepare students for the job market by encouraging and assisting them in obtaining a Certificate of Completion or an Associate Degree. They are also provided with valuable experience through structured job shadowing, community service assignments, and internships with local community agencies, schools, and businesses in the City Heights, Balboa Park, and the local community of San Diego. The involvement in community service activities is coordinated for these scholarship participants. These activities benefit the participant's personal and professional goals as well as the greater community.For the fiscal year July 1, 2016 through June 30, 2017, the Price Scholarship program assisted over 54 students. 15 Price Scholars from the 2015-2017 cohort completed the two-year program. Twelve Scholars from this cohort transferred to four year universities from the Price Scholarship Program after one year of participation in the Price Scholarship Program. The two cohorts (2015-2017 and 2016 -2018) served 10 community non-profit organizations with a total of 14,107 hours of community service valued at $239,819 provided to 10 community non-profit organizations. Ten of the 2015-2017 cohort of 15 Price Scholars completied the Price Scholarship Program and graduated from San Diego City College. These graduates have gone on to other 4 year universities. Eight Price Scholars from former cohorts have transferred to 4 year universities, making a total of 18 Price Scholarship graduates this May, 2017. Ten former Price Scholars have graduated with their BA's from 4 year universities. A total of $597,479 was granted to San Diego Community College Auxiliary Organization to run this program for fiscal year 2016-2017. A total of 34 new Scholars were admitted into the new 2017-2019 cohort program.

IRS990ScheduleI/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0The Sol Price Retailing/ Service Scholarship program gives educational opportunities to students attending City College by running a program through the College that provides financial assistance, academic assistance, and individual counseling. The organization ensures the grants to San Diego Community College Auxiliary are used to carry out the purpose of this program through reports from the employees of the program (paid through the Community College Auxiliary) to the Board of Governors of this entity. In addition, the board members are involved in the selection of the students for this program and follow their progress through the three years in the program. Applications for the Price Scholarship Program are accepted from January through the middle of March from eight high schools located within the Central San Diego area. The applications are reviewed by a screening committee consisting of the Program Director, Mental Health Counselor, Program Administrative Assistant, and the Extended Opportunity Program and Services ("EOPS") Director to determine if the applicants are eligible and have completed all of the requirements for submitting their applications. After the initial screening, approximately 40 applicants are selected for interviews. Each applicant has a 20 minute interview with a panel of 4 interviewers. The applicants are interviewed by program staff, City College EOPS Counselors, Board Members, Community Service site supervisors, and current Price Scholars. The applicant's interviews are scored by each member of the panel and those students with the highest scores from the interview are offered the Price Scholarship opportunity. This year the Sol Price Retailing/Service Scholarship program awarded 34 scholarships and had 32 continuing scholars. Each student commits to 200 to 300 of hours of community service work. The student receives a stipend based on his/her community service hours committed to.
