Mission

The mission of the organization is to provide assistance to faculty and staff seeking external funding and other resources to support research and service projects for students, faculty, and the community.we also provide post-award assistance to faculty, staff, and the campus in administering awards both fiscally and programmatically.

THE SECOND PHASE OF THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION/TEACHER QUALITY PARTNERSHIP (TQP) PROJECT FUNDED THE DESIGN AND DELIVERY OF THER KERN RURAL TEACHER RESIDENCY PROGRAM. THE KERN RURAL TEACHER RESIDENCY PROGRAM AIMS TO REDUCE THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP OF STUDENTS IN HIGH-NEED, RURAL SCHOOLS BY ADDRESSING THE HIGH TEACHER TURNOVER RATES WITH MINORITY AND ENGLISH-LEARNER POPULATIONS. THIS HIGH-QUALITY TEACHER PREPARATION PROGRAM IS IN ITS FOURTH YEAR. THE PROGRAM HAS RECRUITED AND TRAINED APPROXIMATELY 100 TEACHERS FOR RURAL, HIGH-NEED SCHOOLS IN CLOSE PARTNERSHIP WITH THREE RURAL SCHOOL DISTRICTS. IN ADDITION, THE PROGRAM HAS FUNDED MULTIPLE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR THOUSANDS OF LOCAL TEACHERS FROM 48 SCHOOL DISTRICTS ON A RANGE OF TOPICS INCLUDING MATHEMATICS PEDAGOGY, SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING DESIGN FOR STUDENTS, AND SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING IN THE CLASSROOM.

CHILDREN AGES SIX MONTHS THROUGH FIVE YEARS OF AGE (WHO ARE NOT ATTENDING KINDERGARTEN) ARE ELIGIBLE FOR ADMISSION. PRIORITY FOR ENROLLMENT IS GIVEN TO CHILDREN OF CSUB STUDENTS, FACULTY, AND STAFF. IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0OTHER EDUCATIONAL ADVANCEMENT PROGRAMS INCLUDING:CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY BAKERSFIELD - HIGH SCHOOL EQUIVALENCY PROGRAM (HEP): THE PURPOSES OF THE CSUB-HEP PROGRAM IS TO ASSIST MIGRANT AND SEASONAL FARM WORKERS AND THEIR DEPENDENTS IN DEVELOPING THEIR KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS SO THAT THEY MAY SUCCESSFULLY EARN A GED AND PURSUE PROFESSIONAL AND ACADEMIC GOALS. TO HELP MEET THESE GOALS, VARIOUS STRATEGIES WERE DESIGNED TO ENSURE THAT HEP PARTICIPANTS RECEIVED ADDITIONAL SUPPORTIVE SERVICES IN THE AREAS OF CAREER AND ACADEMIC COUNSELING, ACADEMIC ASSESSMENT AND PLACEMENT, HEALTH SERVICES, AND FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE. EXAMPLES OF SUCH SUPPORT SERVICES INCLUDE EYE CARE, GED TEXT/SUPPLIES, GED EXAM, TRAVEL EXPENSES FOR OUR COMMUTER STUDENTS, CULTURAL/SOCIAL FIELD TRIPS, ETC. CSUB-HEP WILL CONTINUE TO SERVE 100 STUDENTS ANNUALLY DURING THE YEARS 2015-2020, WITH A GOAL TO SERVE 500 STUDENTS BY THE END OF THE GRANT IN 2020. MULTIPLE GED INSTRUCTION SITES ARE HELD IN FARMING COMMUNITIES THROUGHOUT KERN COUNTY SUCH AS WASCO AND SCHOOL LOCATIONS SUCH AS INDEPENDENCE HIGH SCHOOL, LAMONT MIDDLE SCHOOL, GOLDEN VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL LOCATED IN SOUTHERN KERN COUNTY, AND MIRA MONTE HIGH SCHOOL. AS PER THE GOVERNMENT PERFORMANCE AND RESULTS ACT (GRPA), IN THE FIRST TWO YEARS (2015-2017), CSUB-HEP HAS EXCEEDED ITS BENCHMARK BY ACHIEVING AN ANNUAL 87% GRADUATION RATE AND BY PLACING 80% OF HEP GRADUATES INTO POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION, VOCATIONAL TRAINING, AND/OR GAIN IMPROVED EMPLOYMENT. ALTOGETHER, THE CSUB-HEP STAFF, DIRECTOR, ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, COORDINATOR, RECRUITERS, INSTRUCTORS, AND TUTORS CONTINUE TO WORK HARD FOR EACH STUDENT TO SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE THEIR GED AND PREPARE THEM FOR OTHER POSITIVE OUTCOMES IN THIS SOCIETY.THE COLLEGE ACCESS MIGRANT PROGRAM (CAMP) CONTINUES TO PROVIDE CSUB STUDENTS WITH A MIGRANT BACKGROUND AN ARRAY OF SUPPORT SERVICES THAT BEGINS WITH A SUMMER PROGRAM AND IS COMPLEMENTED BY INDIVIDUAL ADVISING, CAREER DEVELOPMENT, AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITIES THROUGHOUT THE ACADEMIC YEAR. STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN THIS PROGRAM NUMBER EIGHTY ANNUALLY. THE BUILDING HEALTHY COMMUNITIES (BHC) GRANT AIMS "TO IMPROVE THE HEALTH OF SOUTH KERN SO THAT CHILDREN ARE HEALTHY, SAFE AND READY TO LEARN, AND FAMILIES AND THE COMMUNITIES ARE HEALTHY AND STRONG". THE PROGRAM IS ONE OF FOURTEEN SITES FUNDED THROUGHOUT CALIFORNIA BY THE CALIFORNIA ENDOWMENT IN A LONG-TERM EFFORT TO ADDRESS POVERTY AND IMPROVE HEALTH AND ECONOMIC STATUS THROUGH DEEP, SUSTAINED COMMUNITY-DRIVEN INVESTMENTS AND PARTNERSHIPS. BHC SOUTH KERN IS COMPOSED OF LOCAL GRANTEES, PARTNERS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND IS MANAGED THROUGH THE LAMONT WEEDPATCH FAMILY RESOURCE CENTER/LAMONT SCHOOL DISTRICT WHICH SERVES AS THE HUB FOR THE PROJECT. CSUB SERVES AS THE FINANCIAL HUB FOR THIS PROJECT AND MANAGES THE BUDGET AND THE REPORTS FOR THE PROGRAMS.
