The East Durham Childrens Initiative is committed to changing outcomes and expectations for children and families living in a 120-block area of East Durham. Modeled after the Harlem Childrens Zone, EDCI aims to reach this goal by creating a pipeline of high-quality services that starts with children at birth and continues through elementary, middle, and high school. EDCIs vision is for all children in the EDCI Zone to graduate from high school, ready for college or career.
Durham children's initiative provides a pipeline of high-quality services for the children of durham. Dci develops and implements a systematic continuum of academic, mentoring, workplace, and family support programs for durham youth which maximizes the use of resources.

“Bylaws were amended during the 2023 fiscal year. Amended language is as follows: article ii founding members, section 1. Founding members article removed article ii board of directors, section 1. General powers the property, business, and affairs of the corporation shall be overseen by its board of directors in accordance with these bylaws and the purposes of the corporation. The board is responsible for the overall policy and direction of the corporation and delegates responsibility for day-to-day operations to the ceo. Specific powers of the board of directors include but are not limited to: a. Defining the mission, goals, and objectives of the corporation and assigning priorities among the goals and objectives when necessary; b. Selecting the corporation's ceo and periodically reviewing his or her performance; c. Approving major personnel policies; d. Reviewing and approving the corporation's budget; e. Raising the financial resources required to meet the corporation's goals and objectives, as coordinated by the ceo, and establishing general fund-raising policies. Article ii board of directors, section 2. Number and qualifications the number of directors shall be not less than fourteen nor more than twenty- five. The directors shall include parents and/or guardians within the dci ecosystem and persons who have participated in dci programming. Directors shall have a demonstrated commitment to advancing the corporation's purpose. Diversity of age, gender, race, and professional occupation shall be considered in nominating directors for election to the board. Article ii board of directors, section 4. Election directors may be elected to the board of directors at the annual meeting of the board of directors. The ceo of the corporation shall serve as a member of the board of directors ex officio and shall not be subject to the provisions of this article. Article ii board of directors, section 5. Terms of office each director, unless otherwise replaced, shall be elected to serve for a term of three years. No director shall serve more than two (2) consecutive terms. After one year, the person would be eligible to serve again as a director. Directors may be elected to the board of directors from a slate of potential members presented by the governance committee. All elected directors terms will begin on july 1 following the election. Exceptions to these term limits shall be made for officers whose election to office extends their time on the board beyond the normal term, to the extent necessary to allow completion of their term in office. Any director may resign at any time by giving written notice to the chair of the board. The resignation shall be effective upon receipt of notice or at a later date if specified in the notice; and, unless otherwise specified therein, the acceptance of such resignation shall not be necessary to make it effective. ANALYSES UTILIZING DATA FROM THE NC EDUCATION RESEARCH DATA CENTER INDICATES A ROBUST POSITIVE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE TOTAL NUMBER OF EC PROGRAMS AND INVOLVEMENT WITH AN ADVOCATE PRIOR TO SCHOOL ENTRY AND PERFORMANCE ON K-2 LITERACY ASSESSMENTS (DIBELS COMPOSITE PROFICIENCY; AND TEXT READING COMPREHENSION PROFICIENCY).HOLIDAY ZONE ACTIVITIES PROVIDED WRAPPED TOYS FOR CHILDREN WHO PARTICIPATE IN THE FAMILY ADVOCACY PROGRAM.BASIC NEEDS SUPPORT: CONTINUING THE BASIC NEEDS EFFORTS THAT BEGAN DURING THE PANDEMIC, DCI FOCUSED ON DISTRIBUTING ITEMS SUCH AS FOOD AND DIAPERS. OUR ACADEMIC COACHING PROGRAMMING SERVED APPROXIMATELY 30 STUDENTS IN GRADES K-12.WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT: THE MANAGER OF WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT ALONG WITH FAMILY ADVOCATES IDENTIFIED YOUTH AGES 14+ FOR THE SUMMER WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM. THIS PROGRAM HAD OVER 25 PARTICIPANTS.
