Mission

To help keep ranches in the madison valley viable and promote good stewardship, promote open space, and healthy way of life that has western values and clean water and wildlife habitate and healthy ranchlands.

Weed control and education tours on local ranches to use wildlife as assets; helping ranchers deal with wildlife issues; and new brucellociss surveillance area regulations; working to setup compost site and carcass.

OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: CO-OPERATIVE WEED CONTROL PROJECTS- We partnered with the Madison County Weed Board on a special project in Meadow Creek watershed near McAllister. The Weed Committee helped facilitate this project by performing extensive outreach to landowners, communicating with commercial applicators, surveying and mapping. Our crew also participated in the annual Bear Trap Spray Day, a large cooperative effort that brings together public land managers and the public. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: NOXIOUS WEED COORDINATION - The MVRG Weed Committee works closely and coordinates with professionals across the state (and often throughout the West). The Project Coordinator is the SW MT Biocontrol Representative, participates in statewide biological control steering committee meetings and the SW Area of the MT Weed Control Association's Council. We also have agreements with both the Bureau of Land Management and the MT Department of Transportation. The Committee also spends much time working with other public and private land managers to address noxious weed issues in the region. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: CARCASS COMPOST SITE - The site is managed by the Bar MZ Ranch and the MVRG Project Director. There are substantial costs associated with placing carcasses in the bunkers, monitoring the carcass decomposition process and keeping the electric fenced enclosure maintained, turning the piles, and materials for mixing to make the compost. DEQ training session for proper management are currently on-line and help with maintain the site accreditation. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 7: EDUCATION AND OUTREACH - MVRG partners in the Winter RoundTable Series which brings presenters together with local ranchers and others of the public to share ideas relevant to current challenges and new concepts for rancher profitability and land use health. The pandemic last year encouraged us to try live virtual presentations which we then posted as You Tube videos. Our 4 presentations last year have had over 750 views on-line We were a partner in the Wildlife Series Summer Presentations... The new website was completed in 2021 for sharing programs and activities. MVRG is active in safety trainings for people working livestock, interacting with carnivores, and operating farm machinery... Trail camera follow up: Cameras were distributed in 2020 to monitor and confirm carnivore activity on summer grazing pastures. MVRG contacts the people with the cameras and gets the picture cards for downloading the pictures. Battery replacement and confirming the cameras are placed and in use Active in the CRC(Conflict Reduction Consortium) a western states group working to find solutions to pressures on working lands... Carcass Management Technical Advisory Committee member for NRCS and FSA program innovation and implementation protocols Virtual presenter at several on-line meetings regarding conflict prevention strategies and current challenges facing ranchers and open space fragmentation Rancher Handbook mailings.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0WEED BIO CONTROL- The Madison County Biocontrol project continues to be one of the most successful in the state. In 2022, the crew collected and released over 85,000 specialized insects, surveyed and mapped dozens of properties and spoke with many landowners. The project also is an important partner in the statewide study of a new biocontrol for Canada thistle. In 2022, we revisited and monitored 17 sites, re-inoculated 13, and spent 3 days in the field harvesting infected plant materials in the fall. This work was done in Beaverhead, Gallatin, and Madison counties.

OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: NOXIOUS WEED COORDINATION - The MVRG Weed Committee works closely and coordinates with professionals across the state (and often throughout the West). The Project Coordinator is the SW MT Biocontrol Representative, participates in statewide biological control steering committee meetings and the SW Area of the MT Weed Control Association's Council. We also have agreements with both the Bureau of Land Management and the MT Department of Transportation. The Committee also spends much time working with other public and private land managers to address noxious weed issues in the region. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: CARCASS COMPOST SITE - The site is managed by the Bar MZ Ranch and the MVRG Project Director. There are substantial costs associated with placing carcasses in the bunkers, monitoring the carcass decomposition process and keeping the electric fenced enclosure maintained, turning the piles, and materials for mixing to make the compost. DEQ training session for proper management are currently on-line and help with maintain the site accreditation. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 7: EDUCATION AND OUTREACH - MVRG partners in the Winter RoundTable Series which brings presenters together with local ranchers and others of the public to share ideas relevant to current challenges and new concepts for rancher profitability and land use health. The pandemic last year encouraged us to try live virtual presentations which we then posted as You Tube videos. Our 4 presentations last year have had over 750 views on-line We were a partner in the Wildlife Series Summer Presentations... The new website was completed in 2021 for sharing programs and activities. MVRG is active in safety trainings for people working livestock, interacting with carnivores, and operating farm machinery... Trail camera follow up: Cameras were distributed in 2020 to monitor and confirm carnivore activity on summer grazing pastures. MVRG contacts the people with the cameras and gets the picture cards for downloading the pictures. Battery replacement and confirming the cameras are placed and in use Active in the CRC(Conflict Reduction Consortium) a western states group working to find solutions to pressures on working lands...
