Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Educating the public about sculpture and promoting sculpture

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
From September 5 - 23, 2018, "Shelter", our collaborative exhibition with Da Vinci Art Alliance, was on view in the DVAA Gallery in Philadelphia's Bella Vista neighborhood. An open call for artists working in three dimensions resulted in a show that included diverse media and thoughtful interpretations of the theme of "shelter." PS members, DVAA members, and artists from the greater Philadelphia community submitted works for the show, and curator Elaine Crivelli selected twenty-one artists to exhibit their works. The opening reception attracted about 80 people.$0$1,588
From July 12 through October 5, 2018, we collaborated with the Havre de Grace Maritime Museum in Havre de Grace, MD for "Oars for Art." Old wooden oars from the Museum were provided to artists to use to create sculptures. 16 artists were chosen in an open competition, by Jim McFarland, Professor of Art at Harford Community College. The 17 sculptures were exhibited in the commercial district of Havre de Grace. Venues included shops, restaurants, inns, library, opera house, tourist bureau, museums and art galleries, visited by thousands of people. A map of the sculptures and locations was distributed all over. They were removed from those venues in the beginning of September, and were returned to the Museum where they were on display in the main gallery through October 5. On that date, a public reception took place and the artworks were auctioned off, with the proceeds benefiting the artists and the Maritime Museum. About 50 people attended the closing reception and auction.$1,500$1,546
From June 8 - 24, 2018, we presented our 19th annual "5 into 1" exhibition of the works of graduating sculpture students from five area colleges: Moore College of Art & Design, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Tyler School of Art, the University of the Arts, and the University of Pennsylvania. "5 into 1" provides recent graduates with a special opportunity to exhibit their art in a professional gallery, and presents the public with some of the best work of emerging artists in Philadelphia. Three emerging curators, Jacintha Clark, Aimee Gilmore, and Chenlin Cai, selected eight students. For the first time, the show was held at the University of Pennsylvania, in the Charles Addams Gallery, a new venue. The opening reception attracted about 120 visitors, mostly young people and college students.$600$1,174
From April 14 - May 5, 2018, we had a members show at the NoBA Artspace Gallery in Bala Cynwyd, PA, a new temporary exhibition space. Ron Klein, Sculptor and Professor Emeritus at St. Joseph's University, was the juror. He selected 13 artists using a range of sculptural techniques, themes, styles and media. Works were created from steel, wood, bronze, paper, plaster, fiber, and mixed media. Artists addressed topics that included war and gun violence, animals, and traditional and non-traditional portraits. About 130 people attended the free public opening reception.$0$461
From October 8 - December 7, 2018, Philadelphia Sculptors had a members' show at Philadelphia's City Hall that is part of the Art in City Hall program sponsored by the Philadelphia Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy. Most City Hall exhibitions are open, juried shows, but in order to honor the International Sculpture Center's conference that took place from October 25 - 28, 2018, Philadelphia Sculptors was invited to participate and show works of our members. The exhibition took place in five large glass cases on the 2nd floor of City Hall near the Mayor's Office. Since much of City Hall's official business occurs in the adjacent rooms, hundreds of people saw the show during its run. "Philadelphia Sculptors Present" was intended to represent the state of three-dimensional art in Philadelphia today. Twenty PS members were chosen by Amie Potsic, CEO & Principal Curator of Amie Potsic Art Advisory, LLC, to exhibit a wide variety of artworks that provided an opportunity for the public to learn more about sculpture. The goal was to promote local sculptors and sculpture, and an affiliated show that was open to the general artist pool, "Ethereal/Material," was mounted in the City Hall Gallery on the first floor. Philadelphia Sculptors is affiliated with the International Sculpture Center, based in Hamilton, NJ, and the show was up during the ISC annual conference. A few hundred people, including conference attendees, attended the opening reception, with all visitors to City Hall able to view the works over the two months it was on display.$0$260
On April 28, 2018, we participated in the International Sculpture Center's "International Sculpture Day" by sponsoring a bronze pour at the Germantown, Philadelphia studio of PS members Gina Michaels and John Phillips. Bronze pouring into open sand molds was demonstrated to an audience of 22 people that included artists, children, and interested members of the public. The event was free to all.$0$0
