Historic Preservation:After the last prisoners left Eastern State Penitentiary in 1971, the prison stood for over twenty years, untouched, with no maintenance or care, causing the buildings and structures of this National Historic Landmark to fall into a state of severe deterioration. The site's condition threatened both its structural and educational future, prevented or drastically hindered public tours of the grounds and prohibited interpretation of the site's place in American history; thus, stabilization and preservation of the entire site and all of its structures and buildings was, and continues to be, of vital importance. ESPHS's restoration activities provide visitors with a clear understanding of the prison's history, its design and use, and how the site changed and evolved over time. In 2010, in addition to the $450,802 of expenses allocated and spent upon general maintenance, ESPHS incurred $545,789 of leasehold improvement expenses, and an additional $1,648,478 million in ongoing restoration projects: including but not limited to: (1) the restoration of seven of the prison's cellblock roofs; 2) the masonry restoration of the Bertillion building parapet capstones; (4) the restoration of a large skylight on, and initial conservation of the interior murals, in the site's Catholic Chaplain's office building; (5) the stabilization of the prison's kitchen roof and restoration of its corbelled chimney; (6) the installation of a new TowerCam exhibit; and (7) various electrical and masonry upgrades. ESPHS has also restored and preserved specific spaces - including a prisoner's 1830 cell and the prison's 1924 synagogue.

Activity 3

Exhibits:In 2010, ESPHS unveiled its new commissioned exhibit titled "Release," a site-specific piece by filmmaker Bill Morrison and composer Vijay Iyer. Release corresponds to the 80th anniversary of Al Capone's release from the Eastern State Penitentiary. The footage, never before seen by the public, shows a crowd outside the prison walls anticipating Capone's release. Over 114,741 visitors saw Release in 2010. ESPHS also spent over $9,941 in 2010 - funded by donations - to continue its Oral History program.
