IRS990/Desc0VISITOR EXPERIENCE - JAMESTOWN SETTLEMENT AND THE YORKTOWN VICTORY CENTER ARE LEADING CENTERS OF EDUCATION AND TOURISM. THROUGH NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED LIVING-HISTORY PROGRAMS AND MUSEUM GALLERIES, THEY TELL THE STORIES OF WHERE AND HOW AMERICA BEGAN. LIVING-HISTORY AREAS COMPLEMENT THE MUSEUMS' EXHIBITION GALLERIES BY INVOLVING VISITORS IN INTERACTIVE, HANDS-ON LEARNING. SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS AND THEMED PROGRAMS AND EVENTS OFFER OPPORTUNITIES TO EXPLORE TOPICS IN GREATER DEPTH. WHILE THE JAMESTOWN-YORKTOWN FOUNDATION RECEIVES PARTIAL OPERATING SUPPORT FROM THE COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA AND WORKS HARD TO EARN INCOME THROUGH ADMISSION TO OUR MUSEUMS, PRIVATE DONATIONS MADE A CRITICAL DIFFERENCE IN OUR ABILITY TO ENGAGE AND EDUCATE THE 617,533 VISITORS TO OUR MUSEUMS IN 2013. SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS AND THEMED PROGRAMS AND EVENTS WERE PART OF THAT VISITOR EXPERIENCE, OFFERING OPPORTUNITIES TO EXPLORE TOPICS IN DEPTH. THE SPECIAL EXHIBITION "JAMESTOWN'S LEGACY TO THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION" WAS TOURED BY MORE THAN 61,000 VISITORS DURING ITS 11-MONTH RUN AND WAS WELL RECEIVED BY THE PUBLIC BASED ON THE RESULTS OF VISITOR SURVEYS. THE EXHIBIT SUCCEEDED IN ITS AIM TO THEMATICALLY LINK THE NEW YORKTOWN MAIN GALLERY EXHIBITS WITH EXISTING EXHIBITS AT JAMESTOWN SETTLEMENT. IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0COLLECTIONS - THE JAMESTOWN-YORKTOWN FOUNDATION COLLECTION CONTAINS APPROXIMATELY 210,000 ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND NON-ARCHAEOLOGICAL ARTIFACTS. WITH CONSTRUCTION UNDERWAY ON THE FUTURE AMERICAN REVOLUTION MUSEUM AT YORKTOWN, 24 ARTIFACTS OF THE 18TH-CENTURY WERE ACQUIRED IN FISCAL YEAR 2014 FOR FUTURE EXHIBIT IN THE NEW MUSEUM GALLERIES. AMONG THESE WERE TWO ICONIC ARTIFACTS THAT SERVE NOT ONLY AS ILLUSTRATIONS OF COMPLEX IDEALS, BUT ALSO CREATE A SENSE OF AWE IN CHILDREN AND ADULTS: A 1776 NEWSPAPER PRINTING OF THE VIRGINIA DECLARATION OF RIGHTS AND A PORTRAIT OF AYUBA SULEIMAN DIALLO. THE LATTER IS A PARTICULARLY SIGNIFICANT ACQUISITION OF ONE OF THE EARLIEST KNOWN PORTRAITS OF AN AFRICAN WHO HAD ONCE BEEN ENSLAVED IN THE BRITISH COLONIES THAT BECAME THE UNITED STATES. THE FOUNDATION'S COLLECTIONS POLICY REFLECTS AN EMPHASIS ON PUBLIC EDUCATION AND EXHIBITION BY ACQUIRING OBJECTS THAT ARE CENTRAL TO A DYNAMIC EXHIBITS PROGRAM. ORIGINAL ARTIFACTS ADD ANOTHER DIMENSION TO THE FULFILLMENT OF THE FOUNDATION'S EDUCATIONAL MISSION, ALLOWING HISTORICAL THEMES AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS TO BE MORE EFFECTIVELY ILLUSTRATED. ALL ARTIFACTS IN OUR COLLECTION ARE GIVEN A HIGH STANDARD OF CARE. OUR CONSERVATION FACILITIES GIVE US THE CAPACITY TO CARRY OUT THE FULL RANGE OF COLLECTION CARE THAT IS EXPECTED AND REQUIRED OF A FULLY ACCREDITED INSTITUTION.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS - DURING THE 2013-2014 ACADEMIC YEAR, JAMESTOWN-YORKTOWN FOUNDATION PROGRAMS SERVED 286,119 STUDENTS THROUGH HANDS-ON SESSIONS AND GUIDED TOURS AT BOTH MUSEUMS AND IN OUTREACH SETTINGS. PRIVATE GRANTS ANN DONATIONS MADE THROUGH THE FOUNDATION, INC., MADE THE CRITICAL DIFFERENCE TO THOUSANDS OF VIRGINIA SCHOOLCHILDREN LIVING IN UNDERSERVED DISTRICTS: MORE THAN 4,000 WERE ABLE TO COME ON A FIELD TRIP TO ONE OF OUR MUSEUMS AND MORE THAN 5,800 WERE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN AN OUTREACH EDUCATION PROGRAM IN THEIR CLASSROOM, ALL AT NO COST TO THEM, THEIR TEACHERS, OR THEIR SCHOOLS. THE FOUNDATION HAS ALSO LAUNCHED NUMEROUS WEB-BASED INITIATIVES THAT BRING THE RESOURCES OF THE MUSEUMS INTO HOMES AND CLASSROOMS AROUND THE NATION AND THE WORLD. THESE INCLUDE EDUCATIONAL VIDEOS, PODCASTS, AND VODCASTS, AS WELL AS LESSON PLANS AND HISTORICAL ESSAYS. WEB VISITS TO WWW.HISTORYISFUN.ORG FOR CALENDAR YEAR 2013 TOTALED MORE THAN 1.2 MILLION. WHETHER IN PERSON OR ONLINE, EDUCATION PROGRAMS SUPPORT AND ASSIST TEACHERS IN MEETING VIRGINIA'S STANDARDS OF LEARNING AND HAVE BEEN ENDORSED BY THE NATIONAL COUNCIL FOR THE SOCIAL STUDIES, THE NATION'S LEADING ASSOCIATION OF SOCIAL STUDIES EDUCATORS. THE FOUNDATION ALSO HOSTS: BROADSIDE SUMMER HISTORY PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN IN PRESCHOOL THROUGH FIFTH GRADE; A SUMMER TEACHER INSTITUTE; A 4-H PEER TEACHER PROGRAM; AND ADULT PARTICIPANTS IN THE ROAD SCHOLAR (FORMERLY ELDER-HOSTEL) PROGRAM.
