ACHIEVEMENTS IN 2017 INCLUDE: AS PART OF A COLLABORATION, A SIGNIFICANT RESEARCH BREAKTHROUGH WAS MADE BY SUPPRESSING THE AFLATOXIN-PRODUCING FUNGUS IN GROUNDNUT. THE DISCOVERY HAS THE POTENTIAL TO DRASTICALLY IMPROVE FOOD SAFETY AND REDUCE LOSSES CAUSED BY THE CONTAMINATION FROM THE POISONOUS CARCINOGEN, AFLATOXIN. RESEARCHERS IDENTIFIED A SET OF GENES THAT HELP CONTROL EARLY DROUGHT RESPONSE IN A POPULAR GLOBAL CROP, BRASSICA RAPA, WHICH PROVIDES CHINESE CABBAGE, TURNIPS AND VEGETABLE OIL. RESEARCHERS CONDUCTED A HIGH-THROUGHPUT PHENOTYPING EXPERIMENT TO MAP GENES THAT REGULATE PLANT HEIGHT IN THE MODEL BIOENERGY GRASS SETARIA WHICH HELPED IDENTIFY SEVERAL LOCI CONTROLLING HEIGHT. 2017 EDUCATION AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS REACHED 2,500 STUDENTS IN 88 SCHOOLS, HOSTED 17 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS, AND TRAINED 20 UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS IN AN 11 WEEK NSF FUNDED SUMMER INTERN PROGRAM. |
