IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0BRIDGES PROGRAM - THE BRIDGES PROGRAM INCREASES UNDERSTANDING AND KNOWLEDGE OF GLOBAL CHALLENGES AND STRENGTHENS BONDS BETWEEN PEOPLE IN THE U.S. (AND BEYOND) AND OUR NEIGHBORS IN GUATEMALA. IN 2020, THE BRIDGES PROGRAM EDUCATED MORE THAN 5,600 INDIVIDUALS AROUND THE WORLD THROUGH 236 EDUCATIONAL PRESENTATIONS (PRIMARILY DELIVERED VIRTUALLY, REACHING MORE THAN 5,500 INDIVIDUALS), AND TWO TRIPS TO GUATEMALA (CONDUCTED PRIOR TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, INVOLVING 53 INDIVIDUALS).

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0SPARK READING PROGRAM - COED'S SPARK READING PROGRAM TRANSFORMS STUDENTS INTO ENTHUSIASTIC, COMPETENT, AND LIFELONG READERS BY PROVIDING CHILDREN'S BOOKS TO IMPOVERISHED SCHOOLS IN RURAL GUATEMALA AND TRAINING TEACHERS IN BEST PRACTICES FOR EARLY LITERACY INSTRUCTION. THROUGHOUT 2020, THE PROGRAM TRAINED 277 TEACHERS FROM 37 SCHOOLS (THROUGH A MIXTURE OF IN-PERSON AND VIRTUAL TRAINING SEMINARS), BENEFITING 7,300 STUDENTS. SOME ADDITIONAL TEACHERS FROM SCHOOLS THAT HAVE COMPLETED SPARK TRAINING IN THE PAST ALSO BENEFITED FROM GUIDANCE IN HELPING THEIR STUDENTS LEARN FROM HOME DURING THE PANDEMIC. STUDIES SHOW THAT KIDS IN SPARK CLASSROOMS TYPICALLY LEARN TWICE AS MUCH AS KIDS IN NON-SPARK CLASSROOMS.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/ExpenseAmt0438593
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0TEXTBOOK PROGRAM - COED'S TEXTBOOK PROGRAM PROVIDES RESOURCES AND TRAINING THAT EMPOWER GUATEMALAN MIDDLE SCHOOLS TO TRANSFORM THEIR QUALITY OF TEACHING AND LEARNING. THE PROGRAM PROVIDES TEXTBOOKS USING A SUSTAINABLE "REVOLVING FUND" MODEL ENSURING SCHOOLS BENEFIT FROM THESE RESOURCES IN PERPETUITY AND TRAINS TEACHERS IN DIDACTIC METHODS (INCLUDING PROVIDING VIRTUAL TRAINING SEMINARS TO NEARLY 800 TEACHERS DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC). MORE THAN 26,400 STUDENTS AT 207 SCHOOLS STUDY EVERY DAY WITH COED TEXTBOOKS, INCLUDING 450 STUDENTS AT 6 SCHOOLS RECEIVING COED TEXTBOOKS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 2020.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc1COMPUTER CENTERS PROGRAM - 53 COED COMPUTER CENTERS (INCLUDING 3 ESTABLISHED IN 2020, SERVING 770 STUDENTS) HELP TO BRIDGE THE DIGITAL DIVIDE IN RURAL GUATEMALA BY PROVIDING HIGH-QUALITY TECHNOLOGY TRAINING TO 13,800 STUDENTS. COMPUTER CENTER STUDENTS GAIN THE SKILLS TO CONTINUE THEIR EDUCATION, FIND HIGHER-WAGE JOBS, AND PERMANENTLY RAISE THEIR STANDARD OF LIVING. THE CENTERS ARE DESIGNED TO LAST FOR THE LONG TERM THANKS TO OUR INNOVATIVE SUSTAINABILITY MODEL, UPGRADING THEIR EQUIPMENT ON A PLANNED REPLACEMENT SCHEDULE WITH MONEY SAVED IN THEIR REVOLVING FUNDS.
