Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of cbc/cts is to provide donors the opportunity to save and enhance lives through trusted community-based resources for transfusion and transplantation. Cbc/cts is dedicated to protecting the donation of blood and tissue from donors to recipients.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Tissue services - as a community tissue service organization, cts is a provider of services to donor families, recipients, and the community through education, recovery, processing and distribution of tissue grafts. Cts ensures an informed donor family, the respectful removal of tissue from the donor, and the processing and safekeeping of the donated tissue until it is delivered for transplantation to a recipient. Cts pays any direct tissue costs and reconstruction fees along with transportation of the tissue donation. The donors do not incur any expenses. Cts is available to recipients to answer questions and tracks recipient's information in the case of an adverse event. Cts researches and develops new technology to better serve recipients. During 2012, cts provided more than 225,000 tissue grafts nationally and internationally and recovered tissue from 1,938 donors. Also, cts works with federally designated organ procurement organizations ("opos") that supplied an additional 2,491 donors and continually trains and audits the opos to ensure that their tissue recovery process meets fda regulations and cts's strict guidelines. In 2012, cts processed a total of 5,428 donors.cts is the largest nonprofit provider of skin grafts for severe burn patients in the united states. All musculoskeletal and skin tissue grafts recovered by each of the ten community tissue services locations in the united states are processed in montgomery county, ohio and then returned to the originating location. Processing and sterilization involves gamma irradiation and other methods of cleaning and disinfecting to ensure that tissue is safe for transplantation.blood and tissue banks exist to meet critical medical needs. The american association of blood banks determined that every day in the united states, approximately 44,000 units of blood are required in hospitals and emergency treatment facilities for patients with cancer and other diseases, for organ transplant recipients, and for saving the lives of accident and trauma victims. The american association of tissue banks calculated that physicians use tissue to save and improve the lives of more than one million americans each year. Donated heart valves can replace damaged valves or correct a baby's congenital defect and allow the heart to function normally. Special grafts help patients with spinal deformities live normal lives. Musculoskeletal tissue can save limbs from amputation and be used to replace bone, tendons and ligaments lost to cancer, severe trauma, degenerative joint disease, arthritis and other conditions. Donated skin can save the lives of burn victims and improve the lives of patients with significant soft tissue defects.
Activity 3
Other services - a primary goal of cbc/cts is to educate the public on the importance of blood, tissue and organ donation. Cbc/cts meets this goal by offering blood and tissue donation educational programs, through traveling mobile education vehicles, by partnering with colleges and universities to educate college and medical students and residents, offering professional educational programs, inviting the general public to use and tour its facilities, and sponsoring websites and a separate website specifically for donors and recipients to share their stories. Research and development activities have expanded to include 6,000 sq. Ft. Devoted to the development of new grafts and tissue processing techniques to benefit recipients and donor families. The stem cell laboratory is involved in the research effort by providing scientific and technical support for a clinical trial evaluating stem cell based therapies. The reference laboratory's main function is to aid area hospitals in the resolution of patient antibody identification problems and to subsequently supply cross matched, compatible donor red cells to recipients. In addition, cbc/cts implemented a transfusion safety program to assist hospitals and physicians in education, safety and the effective use of blood; hosts transfusion safety meetings to provide hospitals an opportunity to come together; recruited, tested and educated 14,000 volunteers who were willing to donate marrow or blood cells to a recipient in need; has an emergency preparedness task force that was formed at the beginning of the iraq and afghanistan wars; and donates tissue and blood to doctors, hospitals, charitable and research organizations.
