Additional Explanations

FORM 990, PART XII, LINE 2C:

The organization has a committee that assumes responsibility for oversight of the review process and selection of an independent accountant. There have not been any changes to these processes.

Financial Statement Notes

PART V, LINE 4:

The purpose of the endowment fund is to award scholarships and to provide for programs. Springer considers the following factors in making a determination to appropriate or accumulate donor-restricted endowment funds including the duration and preservation of the fund, the purposes of springer and the donor-restricted endowment fund, general economic conditions, the possible effects of inflation and deflation, the expected total return from income and the appreciation of investment, other resources of the springer, the investment policies of springer.

PART X, LINE 2:

Springer is a tax-exempt organization under internal revenue code section 501(c)(3). Management believes there are no unrelated activities which would generate unrelated business income tax. Springer recognizes tax positions based on a "more likely than not" threshold. This applies to positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return. Springer does not believe its financial statements include any uncertain tax positions. Springer's policy with regards to interest and penalties is to recognize interest through interest expense and penalties through other expense. Springer's income tax filings are subject to audit by various taxing authorities. The years of filings open to these authorities and available for audit are 2011, 2012, and 2013. In evaluating springer's tax provision and tax exempt status, interpretations and tax planning strategies were considered.
