Mission
Oyate Hotanin (Voice of the People) is a Indigenous Arts and Social Justice organization dedicated to supporting and presenting a variety of Native voices and perspectives in a world out of balance.
Our mission is: To lead a movement for the next 500 years that supports a new era of art, healing, and change. Since 2014, we have been amplifying American Indian thought, voices, and perspectives to complete the missing narratives that hamper deep understanding of our society, spark conversations that bridge divides, and spur action that drives transformation. We create, host, and promote artistic events that draw on our history as the first and most powerful stewards of this nation, building a coalition of individuals and communities that use art, laughter, conversation, and collaborative creativity to heal and transform society one story at a time.

| b) Repair Community Circles. In 2024 we moved to a pilot stage of development and implementation completing an intensive intensive contract for services with St. Paul Public School and their Department of Family Engagement. Our American Indian led, multicultural collective is creating a culturally-rooted Reparative Community Circles to counter the current model of justice, which pits institutions against individuals, prioritizes punitive and ill-considered judgements, circumvents and excludes community voice, and creates a divide between our people and the government at the expense of community well-being. Our team includes respected traditional Dakota healers as well as clinicians, lawyers, and other practitioners who combine a firmly-rooted cultural presence with a deep understanding of the current criminal justice system and how it functions as an instrument of social and political control for Native peoples, African Americans, and communities of color. | $0 | $44,047 |
| a) Society of Mother Earth (S.O.M.E): Connecting Land and People through Indigenous Thought for Climate Rescue. We followed a steady approach to achieve our goals. Monthly meetings of the leadership team gave us the center we needed to follow the path we had laid out for ourselves with this project. In many ways we exceeded our goals in ways that are hard to quantify, but we were moved by the quality of the intentions and people who rose up to join us all along the way. Highlights and examples of project outcomes for Buffalo Show; Flower Power; Wilder Buffalo Rides; Special Events; Repair Circles; Climate Grief Heling Circles; and online engagement: Outcome 1: We crafted pledge from participant contributions Outcome 2: Strong Captured Statements (Sample and Highlights) "Do creative, healing communities exist only in our dreams, or can they be realized? ...an answer revealed itself to me at the Buffalo Show...I was reminded that no dream can be deferred if one's motivation to dream is also fueled by a desire to heal, inspire, and connect with others through art...I closed my eyes. Inside of those metaphors and similes I realized I was no longer alone. As the dream was being realized, a creative, healing community presented itself." In 2024 we moved to a pilot stage of development and implementation completing an intensive intensive contract for services with St. Paul Public School and their Department of Family Engagement. Our American Indian led, multicultural collective is creating a culturally-rooted Reparative Community Circles to counter the current model of justice, which pits institutions against individuals, prioritizes punitive and ill-considered judgements, circumvents and excludes community voice, and creates a divide between our people and the government at the expense of community well-being. Our team includes respected traditional Dakota healers as well as clinicians, lawyers, and other practitioners who combine a firmly-rooted cultural presence with a deep understanding of the current criminal justice system and how it functions as an instrument of social and political control for Native peoples, African Americans, and communities of color. |

We followed a steady approach to achieve our goals. Monthly meetings of the leadership team gave us the center we needed to follow the path we had laid out for ourselves with this project. In many ways we exceeded our goals in ways that are hard to quantify, but we were moved by the quality of the intentions and people who rose up to join us all along the way. Inside of those metaphors and similes I realized I was no longer alone. As the dream was being realized, a creative, healing community presented itself." Oyate Hotanin exists to creatively channel the potential of conversation, stories, art and mobilizing to bring communities together to laugh, think, inspire healing and to address critical issues that spur social change. We are artists, dealing with artistic means, to heal ourselves and simultaneously educate and inform others... responding to current and historic trauma. Our lens is the global impact of racism and genocide in our community. We are working to host regular artistic events and imbed community conversations in these events to develop a movement in Indian country and beyond that supports a new era of art, healing and change. The organization is accomplishing this mission.Funding in 2021 came from a variety of sources including individuals, from private foundations and from other organizations. Fundraising efforts are on-going. Grant applications are submitted when opportunities arise. The website is active at all times.Oyate Board of Directors is a group of individuals that are volunteers, are residents of the state of Minnesota, and are involved in the important issues of our state. They represent a cross-section of the residents of the state. We feel our actions and activities are those of publicly supported 501(c)(3) organization. |
