Financial Statement Notes

Schedule D, Part X, Line 2

The Internal Revenue Service recognizes the Organization as a not-for-profit organization exempt from federal income tax under section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and similar provisions of state laws. The Organization has adopted the accounting of uncertainty in income taxes as required by the Income Tax topic (Topic 740) of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) Accounting Standards Codification (ASC). Topic 740 requires the Organization to determine whether a tax position is more likely than not to be sustained upon examination by the applicable taxing authority, including resolution of any related appeals or litigation processes, based on the technical merits of the position. The tax benefit to be recognized is measured as the largest amount of benefit that is more than fifty percent likely of being realized up on ultimate settlement which could result in the Organization recording a tax liability that would reduce its net assets. The Organization has analyzed its tax positions, and has concluded that no liability for unrecognized tax benefits should be recorded to any uncertain tax positions taken on returns filed for open tax years (2012 - 2014) or expected to be taken in its 2015 tax return. The Organization is not aware of any tax positions for which it believes that there is a reasonable possibility that the total amounts of unrecognized tax benefits will change materially in the next twelve months.

IRS990/Desc0For certain individuals, the AdHoc Group Against Crime organization serves as the bridge between the community and the criminal justice system. To others, we are a caring center for those who are suffering from traumatic events involving homicide or violent crime. Our Vision is a Kansas City community in which, crime and the threat of violence will be significantly reduced and that individuals and families can prosper in a wholesome community, "village" environment. Hundreds of individuals come through the doors of AdHoc each month requesting to have their needs met. The services are multi-dimensional because AdHoc is committed to helping each person who walks through its door. The organization holds support group meetings for the families impacted by homicide. The provision of both, individual and family therapy in the home, an active family support group, community events, assistance with locating runaway and missing youth, assistance with missing adults, reward fund development, family prayer vigils, referral services, job placement, are just a few of the services that are offered by the Adhoc organization. The counseling services offered are unique and have been successful in overcoming cultural barriers related to the negative perception of mental health services. The success of the program is largely due to its accessibility, which helps eliminate the stigma associated with mental health services, particularly within low-income minority and African American community. The AdHoc grief counseling program provides counseling services to the individuals/families of the victims of homicide. The 2015 program year goal was to serve fifty (50) new individuals, and by the end of the year, 82 people received counseling services. The major component is individual and family "In-Home" counseling services that assist each family member with his/her emotional/behavioral adjustment as each transition's through the grieving process. With our partnership with Healthcare Foundation we were able to expand services to Kansas City, Kansas. We work with Kansas City Kansas Police Department's Victim Services Unit, as they respond to homicide scenes; they are able to share our counseling information with families impacted by violence and homicide. The program outcomes evidence that the AdHoc counseling initiative met and exceeded its targeted goal of fifty (50) new family/eighty (82) individuals were involved in the counseling process. As measured by the Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF), the average emotional gain was sixteen (16) points in his/her emotional advancement; an average beginning GAF score of the participants measured at 51 to an ending GAF assessment score of 67. Forty-five (45) % of the participants were assisted in reaching to a level of "understanding" empowering them to advance in their grieving process. (We transitioned to DLA 20 toward the end of the program year) Our community outreach efforts have increased visibility of program services and more community members call our office to request counseling services than ever before. The services we provide are unique and continue to be a great need for the population we serve.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0AdHoc provides other community services to KC Metro residents and families victimized by homicide. For example, a community 24 hour hot line (816) 753-1111 where reports are received anonymously and funds are paid when needed to help the police solve the homicide. The 24 hour youth help line (816) 531-2665, where youth can call anonymously and report potential acts of violence, bullying, and gang activity among their peers. Also, the youth help line is used for youth who are considered as runaways. The use of posters and live radio appeals (over radio station KPRS 103.3 FM) encouraged 31runaways to return home. In the matter of homicides, more than three thousand (3,000) posters have been produced by staff with photos of homicide victims, and distributed in the community where the homicide occurred. This is done by family members, staff and volunteers. A reward up to $1,000.00 is offered through the Brian Euston Reward Fund for tips that lead to the arrest and filing of charges. AdHoc's staff also convenes prayer vigils as a part of the healing process. Prayer vigils support the work of our counselors. In 2015 we organized 25 prayer vigils. Ninety per cent of our families who are victimized by homicide do not have funds to bury their loved ones. We assisted 33 families by being an intermediary between the funeral home and the staff of the KCPD's Victim Support Unit (VSU). This Unit assists our families in completing the necessary paper work for assistance from the State Victim Compensation Plan. AdHoc staff has been the intermediary between family members, the Jackson County Prosecutors Office, the police homicide unit, the court, and other agencies to assist the family through the death of their family member.

Some 200 plus family members were in attendance representing 109 families who had been victimized by homicide. They gathered on the parking lot in front of the AdHoc office at 3116 Prospect.
