Volunteer engagementthe c&o canal trust actively recruits and oversees several volunteer programs to provide meaningful opportunities for the public to contribute to the care and support of the park.1)the trust mobilized 1,122 volunteers during its 5th annual c&o canal pride days to donate 3,366 hours to multiple projects during 8 trust led events, as well as 22 events in partnership with the alice b. Ferguson foundation. The trust undertook a comprehensive review of the program resulting in several enhancements to create a more sustainable and beneficial program going forward.2)the trust formally adopted the great falls and canal quarters locations within the park to provide support year-round under the nps canal stewards program. 3)the trust continued to expand its quartermasters program to provide volunteer support for the upkeep and general maintenance of the canal quarters lockhouses.

Activity 3

Community outreach and engagement:the c&o canal trust as the official non-profit partner of the c&o canal national historical park connects with its local communities, identifying priorities and engaging their support in key park initiatives.1)the c&o canal towns partnership provides regional economic development and community enhancement on behalf of nine communities along the canal reaping the benefits of trail-based tourism and recreation.2)fy12 witnessed the culmination of two major advocacy campaigns to restore the continuity of the towpath. The trust worked to secure $14 million in economic recovery dollars for repairs along the 4 mile stretch at big slackwater, a section of the towpath that had been closed for over 20 years. In addition, the trust helped secure the $4 million necessary for repairs to the major breach at anglers (for which the trust contributed $100,000 to make the project shovel-ready). 3)the trust identified, promoted and supported improvements to the capital crescent trail, the most heavily used trail leading into the park, and to the resurfacing of the towpath between lock 5 and chain bridge.4)to expand awareness, the trust designed, printed and distributed 40,000 organizational and program materials, enhanced its social media presence and utilized other media to inform the public about opportunities to enjoy the park and to volunteer to support the park.
