“Northeastern ohio science and engineering fair's (neosef) goal is to get young adults interested in science and engineering by encouraging them to participate in a science and engineering competition. The local science and engineering fair has been held every year since 1954, and is affiliated with the intel international science & engineering fair (isef). Our all-volunteer organization allows the students to enter our fair without an entry fee. Exhibits in any scientific subject may be made. Students in grade 7 through grade 12 in any public, private or parochial school in cuyahoga, geauga, lake, lorain, summit, portage and medina (ohio) counties are eligible to enter the fair.”

“Local fair operations: the 2020 neosef was cancelled 3 days prior to the event. The event was to be held during the early weeks of the covid-19 pandemic in the us. While schools were still open, and there were no identified cases in northeastern ohio, we felt it too risky to bring over 1,000 people together over a 4-day period, especially due to the large number of elderly judges that participate. We could not locate a sufficient amount of supplies (hand sanitizer and masks) or provide enough distance between participants to ensure everyone's safety. We consulted many physicians, the ohio department of health and the cdc website to assist us with our decision. As it turned out, on march 12th (the day that was supposed to be our awards ceremony), governor mike dewine banned the assembly of more than 100 people in the state of ohio.”
