Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Northeastern ohio science and engineering fair's (neosef) goal is to get young adults interested in science and engineering by encouraging them to participate in a science and engineering competition. The local science and engineering fair has been held every year since 1954, and is affiliated with the intel international science & engineering fair (isef). Our all-volunteer organization allows the students to enter our fair without an entry fee. Exhibits in any scientific subject may be made. Students in grade 7 through grade 12 in any public, private or parochial school in cuyahoga, geauga, lake, lorain, summit, portage and medina (ohio) counties are eligible to enter the fair.

Major Activities

Activity 2
International fair: each of our 9th through 12th grade grand prize winners is awarded an all-expense paid trip, along with a chaperone, to represent neosef at the intel international science & engineering fair. Neosef grand prize winners will compete with over 1,200 students from all 50 states and more than 40 countries for over 3,000,000 in scholarships and prizes.
Activity 3
Cleveland public schools outreach program: the goal of the outreach program is to increase minority and underprivileged student participation in science by competing in science fairs. This program was not operated in the past year. The program may be reinstituted in the future depending on the outcome of a reevaluation of the program.

IRS990ScheduleI/Form990ScheduleIPartIV/Explanation01ST AND 2ND PLACE AWARDS: ALL STUDENTS PARTICIPATING IN NEOSEF ARE ELIGIBLE FOR PLACEMENT AWARDS WHICH ARE BASED ON MERIT. 1ST PLACE AWARD WINNERS RECEIVED 100, A GOLD MEDAL AND A BLUE RIBBON, 2ND PLACES WINNERS RECEIVE 25, A SILVER MEDAL AND A RED RIBBON. VOLUNTEER SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS FROM THE COMMUNITY EVALUATE THE COMPLEXITY OF THE STUDENT'S SCIENCE PROJECT, IF THE APPROACH USED TO TEST THE HYPOTHESIS WAS WELL THOUGHT-OUT AND WELL EXECUTED, AND ALSO ASSESS THE STUDENT'S UNDERSTANDING OF THE PROJECT. TEAMS OF JUDGES MEET TO DISCUSS THE PROJECTS AND COLLECTIVELY ASSIGN PLACEMENT. ALL JUDGES MUST SIGN A DOCUMENT INDICATING THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY CONFLICT, OR ANY PERCEIVED CONFLICT OF INTEREST. SHOULD A CONFLICT ARISE, THE JUDGE IS REASSIGNED TO A DIFFERENT CATEGORY, THEREBY ELIMINATING THE CONFLICT SINCE STUDENTS COMPETE FOR PLACEMENT AGAINST ONLY STUDENTS WITHIN THEIR OWN CATEGORY AND NOT ACROSS CATEGORIES. BOARD MEMBERS OF NEOSEF DO NOT PARTICIPATE IN THE DETERMINATION OF PLACEMENTS AWARDS. . OUTREACH PROGRAM (FUSE) PROGRAM: ALL SCIENCE TEACHERS IN THE CLEVELAND METROPOLITAN SCHOOL DISTRICT INTERESTED IN HOSTING A SCHOOL SCIENCE FAIR MAY APPLY TO RECEIVE FUNDING (500-1000) AND MENTORING FROM NEOSEF'S FUNDING FOR SCIENCE EDUCATION (FUSE) PROGRAM. FUNDS ARE TO BE USED TO PURCHASE SUPPLIES FOR SCIENCE EXPERIMENTS, PROJECT DISPLAYS, AWARDS AND LIGHT REFRESHMENTS FOR JUDGES. TEACHERS MUST COMPLETE A 5-PAGE APPLICATION WHICH IS USED TO DETERMINE WHO WILL RECEIVE FUNDING. SELECTION, DONE BY A SUBCOMMITTEE OF THE NEOSEF BOARD, IS BASED ON HOW LIKELY THE TEACHER WILL BE ABLE TO COMPLY WITH HOSTING A SCIENCE FAIR AND SENDING TOP WINNERS FROM THEIR SCHOOL TO COMPETE AT NEOSEF. SINCE THE GOAL OF THIS PROGRAM IS TO GET MORE UNDERPRIVILEGED STUDENTS INVOLVED IN SCIENCE AND SCIENCE FAIRS, AND FUNDS FOR THE PROGRAM ARE LIMITED, SCHOOLS AND/OR TEACHERS NEW TO THE FUSE PROGRAM RECEIVE GREATER CONSIDERATION. IF FUNDS PERMIT, SCHOOLS/TEACHERS THAT HAVE PARTICIPATED IN FUSE AND/OR NEOSEF BEFORE ARE THEN CONSIDERED. TEACHERS ARE MADE AWARE OF THIS STIPULATION.
