Mission

In cooperation with the osu extension service the washington county master gardener service provides relevant research-based education and outreach to the public about horticulture and household pests. This information promotes sustainable practices that minimize risks to human health and the environment.

Washington County Master Gardeners Association Education Garden at Portland Community College Rock Creek Campus Services Provided: The 17,000 sf Education Garden at PCC Rock Creek is comprised of multiple garden sections which are used to demonstrate a variety of sustainable gardening practices for the general public adults and children students at PCC Rock Creek and for training Master Gardeners. Visitors utilize various educational signage and displays as a way to understand how they can adopt such practices for the home garden. In addition educational outreach activities supported by WCMGA take place at PCC Rock Creek including use of PCC RC classroom space and the WCMGA Education Garden. These are accomplished through various didactic and hands-on activities as noted in the Person Benefitted table below. In addition the garden is accessible during daylight hours 365 days year with a conservative estimate of +3000 visitors year. Finally our largest WCMGA educational outreach takes place at PCC Rock Creek as a component of Gardenfest where WCMGA sponsors educational booths featuring sustainable gardening resources and activities for both adults and children. Washington County Master Gardeners Association Learning Garden at Jenkins Estate Services Provided: The 15,000 sf WCMGA Learning Garden at Jenkins Estate is comprised of multiple garden sections to provide demonstration of research-based sustainable gardening practices addressing native plants water-wise plants landscaping food production composting and pollinator needs. The garden is open year-round for adults and families for self-guided tours. Visitors utilize various educational signage and displays to understand how they can adopt practices for the home garden. In addition educational outreach activities supported by WCMGA take place in the garden. Produce grown in the vegetables herbs urban edibles and fruit sections is donated to an Oregon Food Bank partner that serves over three hundred families per week. By donating fresh nutritious produce Master Gardeners are promoting and contributing to a healthier community. Persons Benefitted: WCMGA Learning Garden at Jenkins Estate Activity Participants Impact Garden Visitors* ~ 8000 Open Garden Family Event 139 In the Garden Series free classes for the public 118 Produce donated 911 pounds *Is in addition to garden visits for other activities listed.$0$9,757
Grow 1 Give 1 Services Provided The Grow 1 Give 1 program provides local limited-income and less served families with tomato and pepper starts various seeds potting soil and grow bags plus plant care information in English and Spanish so that they may grow their own and enjoy homegrown foods common to their cultural heritage. Grow 1 Give 1 delivers these healthy veg starts through community food pantries already serving limited income families. Persons Benefitted In its first year 2022 Grow 1 Give 1 distributed 360 plants and 68 grow bags filled with soil at two locations - St Vincent De Paul in Hillsboro Oregon and Centro Cultural in Cornelius Oregon. Seventeen volunteers growers volunteers at the event part of the core team participated. In 2023 the program provided over 540 families with vegetable starts grow bags soil seeds and plant care guidance at four food pantries added Tigard and Beaverton in Washington County. Plans for 2024 include expanding to two additional locations Forest Grove and Aloha covering more rural food pantry sites and delivery of a greater number master-gardener-grown vegetable starts and other food plant seeds.$0$979
