| The BIG FIX provided support to The BIG FIX Uganda which operates the only veterinary hospital in Northern Uganda and provides charity services to the communities. During 2021, the veterinary hospital remained open 365 days, receiving emergency cases 24 hours a day. A total of 2,163 community members brought their animals to the hospital for services. The number of patients included 2,065 dogs, 96 cats, 1 cow, 1 duck, 1 goat, 1 pig, and 2 rabbits. A total of 479 patients were admitted to the hospital for intensive treatment with parvo virus being the top reason for admission. The other admissions included 26 serious trauma cases, 22 poisonings, 11 fractures, 29 cancer patients for chemotherapy, among others. 437 surgeries were performed at the hospital including 166 dog spays, 211 dog neuters, 14 cat spays, 15 cat neuters, and 27 other surgeries such as amputation, hernia repair, eye removal, and tumor excision. A total of 362 community dogs and cats were transported to the hospital for spay/neuter, rabies vaccination, and de-worming. A total of 39 village field clinics were held at which 6,682 dogs and cats received rabies vaccinations, de-worming, and treatment of wounds/injuries. These field clinics provided veterinary services for animals in areas where such services would have otherwise not been available. 118 spay/neuter and other surgeries were performed at these field activities. Field Educators exchanged 2,857 ropes for unsafe neck restraints on dogs and 3,191 dog guardians received one-on- one education from our field educators. In total, The BIG FIX Uganda treated 8,845 animals during 2021 and performed 555 surgical procedures. During 2021, The BIG FIX Hospital opened an infectious disease isolation treatment unit primarily for parvo virus patients to improve survivability from the virus. The COVID-induced lockdown created hardship for many of our Comfort Dog Project participants and their families so an emergency food distribution was carried out in June. The BIG FIX Uganda's school outreach included visits to 15 schools in Gulu City. 4,400 copies of The Great Dog Guardian book were distributed to pupils. The BIG FIX Uganda's Education Program included a campaign concerning the dangerous practice of cutting the tissue from underneath a puppy's tongue and information posters were provided throughout the community. A new rabies education poster in both English and Luo was also printed and distributed. A total of 27 radio talk shows were produced by our Education Manager, on Mega FM and Favour FM. Francis Okello Oloya, manager of The BIG FIX Uganda's Education Program and Comfort Dog Project, was named by the Global Alliance for Rabies Control as the Global Education Champion. As a result of this prestigious award, The BIG FIX Uganda was gifted rabies surveillance tools which will enable BIG FIX and the local governments in Northern Uganda to track and monitor rabies cases and rabies vaccinations. The Education Program, again funded by The Underdog International during 2021, included painting murals with the assistance of primary school pupils. 12 murals were completed during the year. The Comfort Dog Project placed 13 dogs with war trauma survivors as part of our program of psychosocial rehabilitation and the participants completed our 20-week training program. The comfort Dog Project also held a total of 50 village counseling sessions for war trauma survivors with a total of 580 people participating in these sessions. 42 individual counseling and 25 group counseling sessions (which served a total of 307 people) were held for participants in The Comfort Dog Project. A total of 24 guardian meetings were held for CDP project participants. The BIG FIX Uganda rescue officers responded to a total of 39 community calls for animals in need of rescue, all of whom were brought to the BIG FIX hospital. Those animals who had been abandoned or rescued were rehabilitated and placed in new homes. | $172,708 | $172,708 |
