Mission and Program Overview

Mission

Educating and empowering people to take food, energy, and water into their own hands.

Program Services

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
GARDEN YOUR OWN GROWTH - The Garden Your Own Growth (GYOG) program is focused on educating children, schools, and families on how to grow their own food and work as a community to provide an economic return from the produce grown. The primary accomplishments of the GYOG program include 17 school garden partners, including two outside of Norman, OK. Working with teachers and interns to maintain, care, and harvest gardens for school consumption. GYOG volunteers serve as garden checkers to make sure school gardens are thriving, help teachers expand garden curriculum, and work to plan garden expansions that can be economically profitable for the students. The GYOG consulting team offers free evaluations for anybody to plant their ideal garden, its scope, and the costs. Paid services to set up gardens, maintain gardens, offer technical support, vacation maintenance, etc. are offered and the proceeds help support efforts to set up new school gardens and improve GYOG curriculum.$0$16,343
TAKE H2OWNERSHIP - The Take H2Ownership program is focused on educating people how to preserve the quality of water, better understand their watershed, and optimize the use of their water. H2O events range from workshops, community roundtables, watershed cleanups, and school demonstrations. Events are focused on three key objectives - interactive, educational, impactful. Water is a complex system that is affected by everybody and individual behavior coupled with community collaboration can create incredible impacts. H2O Campaigns typically focus on a local issue related to water practices that can be addressed as a household or as a community. Examples of campaigns include rain barrels, low-flow appliances, affecting your watershed, heavy metals, and many others. The campaigns focus on helping individuals understand a problem, evaluating alternatives to address it, and determining a plan of action.$0$0
HOMEMADE SUSTAINABILITY - The Homemade Sustainability program hosts a wide variety of events to educate and excite people about the innovative opportunities available in both energy use and waste reduction. Workshops ranging from renewable energy, recycling the right way, material waste streams, energy conservation, city utilities, and much more have helped empower people in Norman to consider alternatives, focus on use reduction and work as a community to create new opportunities in resource management. We work closely with the City of Norman to decide the most important problems to address in our community. The HS Education services focus on community education, school education, and activist education. Many people are frustrated with energy systems and limited choice, specifically in Oklahoma, but it is important these solutions are addressed in the correct way.$0$0
