Mission and Program Overview

Mission

The mission of The Seed Farm is to cultivate the next generation of farmers. The Seed Farm provides land, training, infrastructure and other support for new farmers to start their own agricultural enterprises. To new farmers who come from non-farming backgrounds, the costs associated with farming are often prohibitively high. They are also lacking vital knowledge and training in many skills that are critical for long-term farming success. With intensive support leading up to and during the first few years of farm ownership, aspiring farmers are able to lay a solid foundation for their new farms. While at The Seed Farm, they receive ongoing instruction about environmentally sustainable growing practices, build credit as well as a customer base, while growing healthy food for the community.

The mission of The Seed Farm (TSF) is to cultivate the next generation of farmers. The purposes of TSF are to 1) provide land, training, infrastructure and other support for new farmers to start their own agricultural enterprises; 2) help mentor new and existing area farmers through a network of experienced Lehigh Valley farmers who have successfully adopted sustainable production and marketing systems; and 3) create a demonstration model of profitable and sustainable agricultural enterprises for new and existing farmers.

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
New Farmer Training: Most new farmers who come from non-farming backgrounds lack vital knowledge and training in many skills that are critical for long-term farming success. The Seed Farm has identified 122 critical knowledge and skill areas, including production, marketing, business planning, and equipment operation. In 2017, new farmer training was delivered in a skills-focused, "short course" format that offered a combination of hands-on experience and classroom instruction. This model was tailored to the needs of beginning farmers due to its increased accessibility and decreased cost. 32 beginning farmers from urban farms and community gardens participated in the short course, Vegetable Farming Basics. Course participants gained hands-on experience and learned the skills critical to producing specialty crops on a commercial scale. Three new farmers completed the course, Introduction to Tractor Operation, in which they gained tractor operating experience as well as more formal lessons on operation and safety. Our new CSA Workshare program allowed 15 community members to gain farming experience and work one-on-one with skilled Seed Farm staff for three hours per week, in exchange for a box of farm-fresh vegetables and herbs. And our newly-launched partnership with Community Bike Works brought six youths from center city Allentown to the farm once a week for four weeks during the summer, providing an introduction to farming as well as life skills, work skills, and increased access to fresh, local food.$0$39,255
Farm Business Incubator: The Seed Farm's farm business incubator provided new farmers with access to land, equipment, infrastructure, mentoring, market opportunities, and more, at reduced rates. During the 2017 growing season, six new farmers received access to these critical and often cost-prohibitive resources. This access allowed them to launch and grow their businesses, receiving intensive support during the risky and expensive first few years of farm ownership. While at The Seed Farm, new farmers receive ongoing instruction on environmentally sustainable growing practices, build credit and a customer base, and lay a solid foundation for their new farms. Incubator farmers must submit annual reports, sharing their income and expenses, challenges and successes from the past year, to The Seed Farm's program committee for review and feedback from experienced growers and educators. Two incubator farms operated on site in 2017. Four new farmers who farmed elsewhere in the Lehigh Valley benefited from "a la carte" access to incubator resources, such as space in the greenhouse and the use of tractors and implements, at reduced rates.$0$24,393
Public farm-based education and outreach. The Seed Farm conducted guided farm visits, community programming, and farm-based workshops in 2017 to provide education on sustainable agriculture, the Lehigh Valley food system and farm operation. 499 community members increased their knowledge and skills by visiting our farm and participating in programming with our partners such as Penn State Extension, Pennsylvania FarmLink, Rodale Institute, and the PA Association for Sustainable Agriculture.$0$14,201
