Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To honor the legacy of mounted warfare in a way that provides unique educational experiences for soldiers and their families and for the civilian community across the nation. Preserves, interprets and tells the story of soldiers who have served in mounted units. Depicts the history and value of killeen/central texas and its unique relationship with the fort hood community.

Major Activities

Activity 2
Our public information program entailed a large number of public information briefings, public awareness initiatives, social media based information offerings, and briefings and town hall like opportunities with local government and state and national governmental leaders. In 2011, the national mounted warfare foundation conducted over 100 of these briefings, with an intended result of raising awareness and soliciting support for the upcoming fundraising effort. The foundation also developed and published several public information products, including email offerings, tri-folds, brochures, and other presentations. These efforts also included training on and implementation of an aggressive social media campaign, which includes a functional information webpage, our first facebook information page, a twitter account, a youtube information video, and a growing community in linkedin. We also participated in public exposition opportunities, allowing the foundation to interact directly with the public and spread information and grow excitement for the eventual fundraising effort. The public information campaign was the foundation of building the database of prospective donors we will cultivate and engage in the very near future. The 2011 public information program will grow in 2012 into a full marketing campaign in support of fundraising for the mounted warfare foundation capital campaign.
Activity 3
Our historical program included several components required for our eventual museum. The history program was initiated in concert with the development of our museum interpretive strategy, a component of the foundation's master plan. This program included forming a storyline working group composed of museum curators and historians familiar with our military museum project. Over the course of calendar year 2011, this group developed a master chronology of candidate events, refined these events into a decade by decade draft of the narrative storyline, and a process for turning this initial work into the exhibit strategy that will eventually appear in the museum's galleries. This historical work was then informed by onsite visits to similar museums and consultation with the center for military history, who advises on and approves the final storyline for the museum. This program also included the initial work with similation, information systems, and gaming subject matter experts who will advise and contribute to the overall visitor experience by installing state of the art technology in the museum. This successful initial work will facilitate our efforts to finalize our planning for the visitor experience for the museum. This effort is closely tied to both the educational program and the public information program.

ADDITIONALLY, OTHER WEB-BASED AND IN-PERSON TRAINING WAS ACCOMPLISHED VIA A NUMBER OF SOURCES (SEE PG 26-29 FOR A COMPLETE LIST). THIS TRAINING ALSO INCLUDED A NUMBER OF BENCH-MARKING VISITS TO OTHER SIMILAR MUSEUM EFFORTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY.
