Governance Explanations

Form 990, Part VI, Line 11B: Form 990 Review Process

The tax return is prepared by an outside accounting firm. After completion of said returns, the organization is sent a draft of the tax returns to be reviewed and examined. The organization makes copies of the returns and distributes to those individuals charged with governance. Those individuals at that time can review and if applicable discuss any line items in the return with the accountant who has prepared the return. If all items are found to be acceptable, an authorization is signed and provided to authorize the outside accounting firm to process, sign and provide copies of the returns to be filed (paper or electronically) with the designated governmental agencies. The tax returns are then signed by the organization, stamped and mailed with certified return receipt or the signed form 8879 is provided to the outside accounting firm allowing electronic filing.

Organization has conflict of interest policy to protect Urban Adamah from becoming engaged in any transaction or arrangement that might benefit the private interest of a Board member or might result in a possible excess benefit transaction.

Form 990, Part VI, Line 15A: Compensation Review & Approval Process - CEO, Top Management

The Executive Director's salary is negotiated every two years in conversation with the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors. The approval of salary is based in a large part of the Executive Director's performance and market rates for comparable positions.

IRS990/MissionDesc0Urban Adamah (the Organization) is a California nonprofit public benefit corporation, founded in 2010. Urban Adamah is an educational farm and community center in Berkeley, California, that inte grates the practices of Jewish tradition, sustainable agriculture, mindfulness and social action to build loving, just, and sustainable communities. They provide educational programs and community celebrations for more than 5,000 visitors per year, as well as a residential fellowship program for young adults that combines organic farming, progressive Jewish living and community internships. Urban Adamah also offers innovative, farm-based programs for school-age children. Their organic farm produces a diverse yield of crops, all of which they donate to the local community through food banks and their weekly Free Farm Stand.

Jewish Farming Summer Camp provides an innovative day camp for children ages 5-12 for seven weeks including an interfaith camp week and a spring break/pre-Passover camp week. Hebrew School on the Farm: in partnership with the Kehillah Community Synagogue in Piedmont and Congregation Beth El in Berkeley, the organization offers an afterschool Hebrew School program that integrates hands-on farm activities, food growing and preparation and arts and music with Jewish tradition.
