IRS990/Desc0The theme of the 21st International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2016), held in Durban, South Africa, on 18-22 July 2016, was Access Equity Rights Now. It gathered more than 13,000 of the world's foremost experts, activists and implementers from 155 countries. AIDS 2016 marked not only the passing of three decades since the first International AIDS Conference (held in Atlanta, United States, in 1985), but also a return to South Africa, specifically to Durban.AIDS 2016 was the place for the leaders of the global HIV response to forge critical plans and hear the voices of those most impacted: people living with HIV and those at risk of acquiring HIV. The conference linked science with policy and activism, encouraging partnerships to produce the mix of efforts needed to achieve success. With the largest scholarship programme in conference history, AIDS 2016 brought together a record 940 scholars from 105 countries to contribute their expertise and learn alongside the world's top experts. More information can be found in the AIDS2016_evaluation_report.pdf under www.aids2016.org

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0The Gilead Grant of US$241,168 supporting the HIV Advocate programmes aimed to support eighty advocates in target geographies to attend the 21st International AIDS Conference (AIDS2016) in Durban on 18-22 July 2016. Grantees were selected from among 1,120 applicants. These HIV advocates were able to network, draw inspiration and knowledge from the conference and from each other, and will go on to develop new project in their organizations and communities. These individuals would not have been able to attend the conference without the support offered by Gilead through the IAS HIV Advocates programme.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0The Gilead grant of US$ 239,495 supporting the Bringing the Science Home programme aims to: - Empower a group of targeted Africa-based HIV professionals in implementing new strategies that align with the latest HIV science, - Create a space where national HIV experts can discuss local specificities and programmes face to face with global experts on HIV. To achieve these objectives, the IAS is implementing four sets of meetings, each including: - A one-day symposium introducing latest scientific research results; - A half-day meeting between scientific experts and key public health implementation agencies on how to effectively incorporate new science and new approaches into national plans. A report focused on the first two sets of meetings which took place in Nigeria in October 2016 and in Senegal in November 2016, incorporating feedback received from meeting participants which was gathered on site and in follow-up surveys was released. Two additional meetings were held first half of 2017 (Morocco in March 2017 and Kenya in May 2017).
