Supporting education through sustainable change in poor, rural communities of Ghana.

DescriptionGrantsExpenses
Water Programfunds are spent on: Drilling the well to find potable water that is sufficiently accessed by 600 families daily; Laying the pipes from the well to the storage tanks; Construction of shed for storage tanks; Construction of overheard tanks that distribute water through spigots at a centralized location; and Fence wall to secure water facility.Funds are used to pay for material and labor to execute the project. The Maalgo project sends money to a partner organization (The Maalgo Initiative) from the community of Vea. Maalgo Initiative is a community based nonprofit organization recognized and licensed by the Ghana Registrar General. It operates under the laws of Ghana but coordinates with The Maalgo Project to be sure that funds from the latter are used responsibly. A member of the Maalgo Initiative is the project director and contracts artisans to do carry out the various aspects of the project such as geological drilling, water testing, pump installation, building of wall and tower.$15,699-
Education ProgramThis project is to resource the community schools with teaching and learning material, and related items aimed at optimizing the potential of teachers and students in the community. This program consists of: Maintaining the community library that was built by Maalgo Initiative in 2009; Collecting and shipping school supplies from the USA; Supplementing the textbook supplies for students; Sponsoring teacher in-service training$11,833-
Lunch programThis program aims to provide basic nutrition for children who would otherwise go hungry at school or fail to come to school because they are too hungry to do so. A committee at the village representing parents and teachers supervise the program. The food is bought from locals or from nearby markets and parents volunteer to cook at the school. No one involved in this is paid except for services such as transportation of the food. The Maalgo project sends money to a partner organization (The Maalgo Initiative) which manages the disbursement through its own bank account.$5,000-
