Financial Statement Notes

PART X, LINE 2:

The foundation recognizes the financial statement benefit of tax positions, such as its position of being tax-exempt, only after determining that the relevant tax authority would more likely than not sustain the position following an audit. The foundation is subject to potential income tax audits on open tax years by any taxing jurisdiction in which it operates. The statute of limitations for federal and state purposes is generally three and four years, respectively.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0ISF SPAY AND NEUTER CLINICS - PROVIDE MUCH NEEDED HEALTH CARE SERVICES IN RURAL AND LOW INCOME AREAS. SPAY/NEUTER SERVICES NOT ONLY SERVE TO CONTROL ANIMAL OVERPOPULATION, BUT ALSO ARE OFTEN MEDICALLY BENEFICIAL FOR ANIMALS PLACING THEM AT LOWER RISK FOR INFECTION AND DISEASE. PROVIDING FREE AND/OR AFFORDABLE SPAY/NEUTER PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN OUR EFFORTS TO END EUTHANASIA AND ANIMAL HOMELESSNESS. IN MAY OF 2016, ISF CONDUCTED A CLINIC IN NEW MEXICO. INDIAN RESERVATION LANDS ARE UNDERSERVED AND SO ISF COLLABORATED WITH TWO OTHER ORGANIZATIONS TO PROVIDE VETERINARY SERVICES FOR STERILIZATION, VACCINATIONS, DEWORMING, PREVENTATIVE MEDICATIONS, AND OTHER AILMENTS AT A NAVAJO RESERVATION IN PINE HILL, NEW MEXICO. ISF FURTHER COLLABORATED WITH PARTNER RESCUE GROUPS THAT WILL CONTINUE OUR EFFORTS BEYOND THE CLINIC ITSELF THROUGH RESCUE AND PLACEMENT OF UNWANTED RESERVATION PETS INTO FOSTER HOMES. ISF FUNDED ALL MEDICAL COSTS FOR THE 2-DAY CLINIC AND PROVIDED THEIR OWN VETERINARIAN TEAM RESULTING IN THE SPAYING AND NEUTERING OF 116 ANIMALS. THIS HAS BEEN A LARGE EFFORT INCLUDING POPULATION CONTROL, HEALTH, ASSISTANCE, AND ADOPTIONS. PUBLIC OUTREAH & EDUCATION - PROVIDES INFORMATION AND PROGRAMS TO EDUCATE AND ENGAGE SUPPORTERS AND TO CREATE PUBLIC AWARENESS OF ISSUES THAT ARE VITAL TO ISF'S CHARITABLE MISSION. IN 2016, ISF PROVIDED DAILY SOCIAL MEDIA POSTINGS TO MORE THAN ONE MILLION SUPPORTERS VIA FACEBOOK, TWITTER AND INSTAGRAM. THE ISF WEBSITE CURRENTLY PROVIDES INFORMATION, EDUCATIONAL CONTENT AND ASSISTANCE, INCLUDING NEW ARTICLES EACH MONTH, CREATIVE CHALLENGES AND ACCESS TO ISF'S GRANT PROGRAMS. ISF VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES ALLOW SUPPORTERS TO GAIN HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE AND ISF BOOTHS AT EVENTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY PROVIDE VALUABLE IN-PERSON OUTREACH. UNITED NATIONS ENVIRONMENT PROGRAMME GOODWILL AMBASSADORSHIP: ISF'S PRESIDENT AND FOUNDER, IAN SOMERHALDER IS DESIGNATED AS A UNITED NATIONS ENVIRONMENT PROGRAMME GOODWILL AMBASSADOR. IAN, IN HIS ROLE AS A UNEP AMBASSADOR AND AS ISF'S PRESIDENT, COLLABORATES WITH ISF TO "CONNECT TO GO GREENER," WITH A SPECIFIC CALL FOR COMMUNITIES - INCLUDING BUSINESSES, ORGANIZATIONS, SCHOOLS AND INDIVIDUALS - TO CONNECT THEIR RESOURCES AND SKILLS FOR A MORE SUSTAINABLE, RESOURCE-EFFICIENT WAY OF LIVING. IN 2016, ISF, UNEP, UNICEF AND WORLD'S LARGEST LESSON ASKED EDUCATORS TO SHARE THE #GLOBALGOALS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT WITH THEIR STUDENTS AND INSPIRE A GENERATION COMMITTED TO MAKING THE GOALS A REALITY BY 2030. WORLD'S LARGEST LESSON WAS SHARED IN 160 COUNTRIES AND WE WILL CONTINUE TO EMPOWER EVEN MORE CHILDREN, IN MORE COUNTRIES TO CHAMPION THE #GLOBALGOALS. WE EXTEND THIS MESSAGE BY INVITING YOUNG PEOPLE EVERYWHERE TO "INVENT, INNOVATE AND CAMPAIGN" FOR THE GLOBAL GOALS THEY CARE ABOUT.ISF EFFORTS FURTHER INCLUDED STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS, CELEBRITY ENGAGEMENT, CAUSE MARKETING, TRADITIONAL MEDIA RELATIONS AND CAMPAIGNS INCLUDING, PLASTIC STRAWS CAN SUCK IT, I DID IT, AND GREEN IN 2016.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0ISF SANCTUARY & PRESERVE - ISF HAS PURCHASED PROPERTY IN ST. TAMMANY PARISH, LOUISIANA, AND IT PLANS TO USE THESE LANDS IN SUPPORT OF ITS CHARITABLE MISSION. ISF'S FOUNDER, IAN SOMERHALDER, GREW UP IN ST. TAMMANY PARISH AND IS DEDICATED TO PRESERVING THESE BAYOU LANDS AND EDUCATING THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS ECOSYSTEM. ISF PLANS TO PRESERVE JUST UNDER 70 ACRES OF BAYOU LAND IN FURTHERANCE OF THESE GOALS AND TO USE ROUGHLY 30 ACRES OF THE PROPERTY TO SUPPORT THE CREATURE POPULATION, YOUTH, AND COMMUNITY NEEDS.
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/ExpenseAmt055538
IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActyOtherGrp/Desc0ISF YOUTH PROGRAMS - ISF YOUTH VOLUNTEERS DEVELOP CAMPAIGNS, BRAINSTORM IDEAS, WRITE ARTICLES, CREATE GRASSROOTS PROJECTS AND HAVE FUN! THEY SPREAD THE WORD, PARTICIPATE IN VOLUNTEER DAYS, MAKE FRIENDS AND EDUCATE OTHER KIDS AND ADULTS ABOUT THE MISSION OF ISF. ISF YOUTH VOLUNTEER ADVENTURES ARE 1 DAY, HANDS ON SKILL AND PASSIONATE DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS WHERE KIDS AND TEENS COME TOGETHER TO HELP ANIMALS AND THE ENVIRONMENT WHILE CONNECTING WITH EACH OTHER. COLLEGE ADVISORY BOARD: THE CAB WORKS IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE COLLEGE DIVISION IN SPREADING THE IAN SOMERHALDER FOUNDATION'S MESSAGE OF ACTIVISM AND SUSTAINABILITY TO YOUNG ADULTS AROUND THE WORLD. ISF'S COLLEGE ADVISORY BOARD MEMBERS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE, DEVELOP AND EXECUTE A "CAB PROJECT" DURING THEIR TERM AS THEY SPREAD THE MESSAGE OF ACTIVISM AND SUSTAINABILITY TO YOUNG ADULTS AROUND THE WORLD.
