“The mission of second life bikes, inc. Is to create a biking community in the asbury park area with a focus on children. The organization primarily uses proceeds from the community bike shop, in addition to grant money, to support a youth earn-a-bike program. In 2013, over 100 children participated in that program and were able to earn a bike after spending time learning bike repair. The program works towards enhancing leadership development skills, developing self-confidence, enhancing hand-eye coordination and imparting first-level applied mechanical and math skills. Many of those children also participated in group rides. During the same year over 800 bicycles were recycled and sold. Over 1,000 low-cost bike repairs were also provided to the community, which is a lmi (low middle income) area in which a significant number of residents rely on bicycles as their mode of transportation.”
