Form 990, Part III, Line 4D: Other Program Services Description

“OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: UR Media: United Roots provides free media equipment and a tech facility to over 50 young people each year. Youth become members of the media & tech departments by completing a United Roots training program offered in a media or tech department. United Roots offers quarterly media training programs, and in partnership with Game Heads offers year-long tech training programs. Amenities available to members of UR Media include a full music studio, two media labs, a tech lab, a computer lab and a multi-purpose classroom with photo/video area and performance space. United Roots also provides access to tech and media equipment to youth participants, including video & photos cameras, sound gear, lighting, music instruments and more. UR Media, a youth-led media company at United Roots with supervision by staff, connects youth participants to paid contracts doing music production, video production, photography, graphic design and web design. United Roots staff members of the media department mentor and supervise youth participant projects and contracts. For more information go to: www.urmedia.org OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: Additional Programs Hosted by United Roots: United Roots Youth Impact Hub facility is available for use by the community, and many of our organizational partners utilize the space for youth programs and events. In 2016 United Roots hosted a 6-week Climate Justice summer camp for young people, an 8-week video game summer camp for over 25 youth and a bi-monthly womens group called Sister2Sister. United Roots hosts ad-hoc community events each week and community organizations rent United Roots for projects and trainings. United Roots also hosts a youth maker-space, and provides an area for clothing and jewelry production, provides event space for Youth Hub Fellows offering trainings and gatherings and offers space for youth doing theater & dance rehearsals. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: Gameheads:A program in partnership with United Roots and fiscally sponsored by United Roots,prepares youth and young adults for a career in the video game industry. Gameheads connects young people to the tech field through electronic entertainment, and participants learn how to code and design video games, websites, apps and more. Gameheads offer a weekly training program during the school-year for up to 25 young people. In 2015-2016, Gameheads youth worked on building over three video games, were trained in providing IT Services and built websites for paying clients. IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0Youth Impact Hub: The mission of Youth Impact Hub Oakland, a program at United Roots, is to support the leadership of low-income youth of color in creating an equitable, life-affirming economy by providing socially innovative training, collaborative co-working space and access to networks and resources.The Youth HUB Fellowship is a comprehensive, yearlong social entrepreneurship training program for emerging young leaders ages 16-24 that are creating positive change in low-income communities. Youth HUB Fellows gain: Business skills: develop a business model, strategy and 10-minute pitch presentation Personal skills: increase 21st Century skills (collaboration & teamwork, critical thinking, problem solving, public speaking, leadership, etc.) Seed funding & resources: receive access to business advisors, pro bono support and financial opportunities to support launch of an enterprise Mentorship: work with professional mentors from Impact HUB Oakland and the local business community Civic engagement experience: implement a product or service that benefits the communityThe 2016 Youth Hub Fellowship provided weekly business classes for 5 months with mentorship from adult business leaders. United Roots organized a Pitch Event for Youth Hub Fellows to present their ideas to the business community, with Fellows receiving seed funding and access to no-interest loans. Youth in the Fellowship launched 8 youth-led social enterprise projects in 2016, and had access to United Roots Youth Impact Hub co-working space Monday through Friday from 12-8pm to meet with business partners and clients. Throughout the yearlong Fellowship United Roots provides office space, conference rooms, computer access, a printer, wireless internet, a phone, media equipment and more. United Roots also provides access to tech and media equipment to youth participants, including video & photos cameras, sound gear, lighting, music instruments and more. UR Media, a youth-led media company at United Roots with supervision by staff, connects youth participants to paid contracts doing music production, video production, photography, graphic design and web design. For more information go to: www.urmedia.org OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: Additional Programs Hosted by United Roots: United Roots Youth Impact Hub facility is available for use by the community, and many of our organizational partners utilize the space for youth programs and events. In 2016 United Roots hosted a 6-week Climate Justice summer camp for young people, an 8-week video game summer camp for over 25 youth and a bi-monthly womens group called Sister2Sister. United Roots hosts ad-hoc community events each week and community organizations rent United Roots for projects and trainings. United Roots also hosts a youth maker-space, and provides an area for clothing and jewelry production, provides event space for Youth Hub Fellows offering trainings and gatherings and offers space for youth doing theater & dance rehearsals. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: Gameheads:A program in partnership with United Roots and fiscally sponsored by United Roots,prepares youth and young adults for a career in the video game industry. Gameheads connects young people to the tech field through electronic entertainment, and participants learn how to code and design video games, websites, apps and more. Gameheads offer a weekly training program during the school-year for up to 25 young people.
