Mission and Program Overview

Mission

To create a foundation for systematic educational reform within newark,nj that results in demonstrable high academic and developmental achievement for all youth.

Major Activities

Activity 2
School options and innovations. The foundation for newark's future believes that all children in newark deserve access to high quality public school options (both charter and district) to meet the diverse needs of students and communities in newark. As part of this strategy, the foundation has made significant direct grant commitments to new district and charter schools, mostly in the form of planning year grants and first year support. Another key initiative in this program is the extended day initiative that fnf created and piloted (in conjunction with the ford foundation) in several nps district schools for the sy2011-12 and sy2012-13 school year. Under this initiative, fnf partnered with leading organization to create and implement after-school programs designed to facilitate high student achievement. A third component of this strategy is the participation in a pooled investment fund with other local funders to provide collective support for district and charter schools in the newark portfolio. By partnering with our local funding partners, the foundation is able to support schools in a way that isn't redundant with the efforts of peer foundations.
Activity 3
Community engagement and building. The nature of this program has transformed since 2010, the year of inception. Initially, this strategy was based on a research project designed to understand the needs of the community by soliciting their feedback on various educational topics affecting newark's children. Having gathered that information, the foundation's community engagement strategy has shifted from one of information-gathering to action and implementation. The goal of this investment area is to create communities where parents are empowered and encouraged to be true collaborative partners in the education of their children. To accomplish this, the foundation has funded a number of projects and initiatives in conjunction with local leadership and national experts, all designed to accomplish one or more of the following:1) fostering a greater understanding of key education reforms in newark2) building a sustainable civic infrastructure to support ongoing collaboration among the key partners in community engagement3) attempting to restore public trust between the district and the community4) engaging existing and new leaders as advocates for quality and public schoolsone of the most critical aspects of this program is the creation of the community advisory board, a group of local leading experts and emerging education voices within the newark community. The group was created to provide the foundation community perspectives on its programmatic initiatives.

IRS990/Activity3/Description0COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND BUILDING.

IRS990ScheduleI/Form990ScheduleIPartIV/Explanation0SCHEDULE I, PART I, LINE 2: THE FOUNDATION FOR NEWARK'S FUTURE HAS A COMPREHENSIVE GRANT MONITORING PROGRAM IN PLACE. THE PROGRAM STAFF MEETS WITH GRANTEES, CONDUCTS SITE VISITS, REVIEWS GRANTEE REPORT SUBMISSIONS AND CONSULTS WITH EDUCATION PARTNERS TO ENSURE THE FUNDS PROVIDED ARE USED FOR THEIR INTENDED PURPOSE.
IRS990ScheduleI/Form990ScheduleIPartIV/Explanation1CERTAIN GRANTS FOR THE NEWARK PUBLIC SCHOOLS (NPS) OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE PROGRAM WERE, AT THE REQUEST OF NPS, PAID DIRECTLY TO CONTRACTORS INDIVIDUALLY (AS INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS) THAT CARRY OUT THE MISSION OF THE NPS PROGRAM. THE FOUNDATION FOR NEWARK'S FUTURE (FNF) ALLOCATES EACH PAYMENT AGAINST THE AMOUNT OF THE NPS GRANT. AS ALL OF THIS ACTIVITY IS A PART OF THE NPS OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE PROGRAM, THERE ARE NO GRANT AGREEMENTS WITH THE INDIVIDUALS DIRECTLY. HOWEVER, THE FOUNDATION DOES HAVE INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR AGREEMENTS WITH THESE INDIVIDUALS. THE INDIVIDUALS THAT ARE PAID CARRY OUT THE PROGRAMMATIC ACTIVITY FOR NPS AND THAT PROGRAMMATIC ACTIVITY IS CONSISTENT WITH THE MISSION OF FNF.
