Form 990

Mission and history the mission of hunter classical christian school ("hunter- or "the school")is to challenge the mind, nourish the spirit and develop the whole child in an atmosphere guided by judeo-christian principles. The school was founded in 2010 under the vision and leadership of dr. Ann mclean. Hunter was named for her father, dr. James g. Hunter, whose character and life are an inspiration. Hunter opened its doors in 2012 to 26 students on the beautiful grounds of dover baptist church in manakin sabot, virginia. Through the intervening years, hunter has faithfully served students and families and outgrew its home in its 9th year. Hunter moved nine miles east of its original campus to derbyshire baptist church in henrico county in the summer of 2021. The opening of the logic school, named for the second stage of the trivium, which serves students in the 6th through 8th grades, coincided with the move to derbyshire baptist church. At hunter, we believe it is our highest calling to partner with parents in the formation of the next generation. In our students, we cultivate wisdom and virtue, the fruit of nourishing a soul in goodness, truth, and beauty through the holy scriptures and the liberal arts. Challenge the mind we cultivate our students minds to think well. Time-tested methods of a classical education go with the grain of a childs developmental stage. Children progress through the three stages of the trivium grammar, logic, and rhetoric to become thoughtful and capable individuals who are prepared to take on the challenges of the world. At hunter, we foster a love of learning and nurture the childs sense of wonder as we partner with parents to prepare students to be lifelong learners. Our approach to education allows students to use all skills across all subjects, and our small class size allows each student to be known and nurtured by our teachers. Our teaching methods are geared to serve motivated students of on-grade level to above-grade-level academic proficiencies. At hunter, we develop a strong foundation and challenge students to do their best work. We offer an academically rigorous and college preparatory program for all of our students. Nourish the spirit we train our students to rightly order their affections to pursue goodness, beauty, and truth whether they are in the classroom, on the athletic field, or in their community. Our understanding of god as our creator and redemption through jesus christ serves as a foundation for all of our teaching and conduct. Our students are known and loved at school by caring teachers and administrators who are intentional in modeling and pointing students to the person and works of christ. We partner with parents, and faith communities to promote the moral development of each child to the end of abundant living. A short list of the judeo-christian values that our school community emphasizes includes: respect, integrity, a strong work ethic, responsibility, and discipline. Develop the whole child at hunter, we embrace the great work of shaping the heart, soul, and mind of young people to live purposeful and abundant lives. We develop discernment in each child to equip them to be wise decision-makers who contribute to their communities with joy and satisfaction. At hunter, students are taught to make connections across subjects and to learn to use all of their skills in every class and in the world. The result is a well-educated student who can see the rich interconnections across subject matter, all the while connecting it back to gods hand in all creation.

Form 990, Page 2, Part III, Line 4A

In the 2021-22 school year, the hunter school grew its student body by 165% over the previous year to serve 86 students while maintaining a 12:1 student teacher ratio. To accommodate additional families and educate more students, hunter moved from its original location to a larger facility that provided additional classrooms, lunch space, and art and science facilities. In the 21-22 school year, hunter expanded to offer two classes per grade in kindergarten and second grade to meet the parent demand for classical christian education; the school grew from 6 homeroom classrooms to 9 homeroom classrooms. Additionally, hunter welcomed its first full class of 12 logic school students, up from the previous year of serving 7 logic school students. Hunter celebrated its 10-year anniversary of delivering its mission to challenge the mind, nourish the spirit, and develop the whole child in an atmosphere guided by christian principles. Hunter expanded its program offerings to include speech and debate for the logic school students and also built a new playground for the upper grammar and logic school students. Furthermore, the board of directors adopted a k-12 vision for the school in order to complete the pedagogical model of classical christian education and encompass all three stages of the trivium: the grammar stage (k-5th), the logic stage (6th-8th), and rhetoric stage (9th- 12th). The first class of the high school is anticipated in the 2025-26 school year with an entering class of 9th grade students.

IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt0MISSION AND HISTORY THE MISSION OF HUNTER CLASSICAL CHRISTIAN SCHOOL ("HUNTER- OR "THE SCHOOL")IS TO CHALLENGE THE MIND, NOURISH THE SPIRIT AND DEVELOP THE WHOLE CHILD IN AN ATMOSPHERE GUIDED BY JUDEO-CHRISTIAN PRINCIPLES.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt1VOLUNTEERS PROVIDE ASSISTANCE IN THE CLASSROOM, ADMINISTRATION AND SERVE IN GOVERNANCE ROLES.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt2IN THE 2021-22 SCHOOL YEAR, THE HUNTER SCHOOL GREW ITS STUDENT BODY BY 165% OVER THE PREVIOUS YEAR TO SERVE 86 STUDENTS WHILE MAINTAINING A 12:1 STUDENT TEACHER RATIO.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt3THE FORM 990 IS REVIEWED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS PRIOR TO FILING.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt4THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS REVIEWS ALL CONTRACTS THAT COULD GIVE RISE TO A CONFLICT OF INTEREST. BYLAWS STIPULATE THAT ANY DIRECTOR HAVING A CONFLICT IS INELIGIBLE TO VOTE ON SUCH MATTER.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt5COMPENSATION ARRANGEMENTS ARE REVIEWED AND APPROVED BY A VOTE OF THE INDEPENDENT DIRECTORS.
IRS990ScheduleO/SupplementalInformationDetail/ExplanationTxt6THE SCHOOL' FORM 1023, APPLICATION FOR EXEMPTION, ITS GOVERNING DOCUMENTS, CONFLICT OF INTEREST POLICY, AND FORM 990 ARE AVAILABLE FOR REVIEW DURING NORMAL BUSINESS HOURS.
