New conscience, inc. (hatebrakers) provides advanced solutions to interrupt the repetitive cycle of hate-breeds-hate and transform perpetrators, victims, and bystanders into leaders, healers, and heroes. Hatebrakers works with schools and community organizations locally and around the globe to further develop tools, presentations, exhibits, educational materials, and publications.
New Conscience, Inc. (HateBrakers) was founded in 2011 by Susan Winter Balk, the widow of Richard Winter, a Viennese Jew who narrowly escaped to America in 1938 as a teenager but never lost his love for Vienna. Richard returned to Vienna in 1988 as a photojournalist to ask a cross-section of Viennese about their thoughts, feelings and memories of the Nazi era. These photos and interviews were published in 2007, after Richard's death, in the book, Vienna's Conscience: Close-Ups and Conversations After Hitler. The book received praise for clarifying the effects of Austrians' denials of their country's role in World War II on their country and themselves.Susan founded HateBrakers to foster more open conversations today about people's hates and dark sides as a way to promote peaceful conflict resolution. HateBrakers provides advanced solutions to interrupt the repetitive cycle of hate-breeds-hate and to transform perpetrators, targets, and witnesses into leaders, healers, and heroes. Worki

| HateBrakers works to reduce hate through our educational and community outreach. Meet a Hero, Be a Hero, Hatebraking 101, brings role models to the classroom to demonstrate the positive transition from haters to healers.Since our founding we have:*Gathered stories of moral courage from HateBrakers of all ages and ethnicities from around the world. We have produced more than 70 videos of these Close-Up Conversations that serve as the focus of our work. *Using video interviews appropriate to provide audience with role models, created our Meet A Hero, Be A Hero: HateBraking 101 program, in which videos that are a part of the educational material allow kids to become immersed and actively involved by breaking down and dissecting the importance of what the interviewees accomplished. In addition, to promoting conversation between students and their peers in which, as a class or group, they become more apt to continue the discussion about sensitive topics like racial tension. HateBrakers created a hundred page educational guide that provides lesson plans and group activities after each video. Our Meet A hero, Be a Hero: HateBraking 101 program may help to prevent the next school shooting, motivated by hatred.*Included within Meet A Hero, Be a Hero: HateBraking 101 options for a student to anonymously name someone they believe threatens their own safety, the safety of others or the safety of the school or community. Students are also encouraged to apologize privately to another student for having been hateful--ignoring, teasing, gossiping or abusive. Such activities give them a chance not only to report danger and to forgive their peers but a chance for them to forgive themselves and move on.*Shared information and resources about the sociological, psychological, and emotional underpinnings of the hate cycle by giving presentations to schools, universities and community organizations. Organizations that we have already partnered with include: AIM High St. Louis, John Burroughs High School, B'nai Amoona, Barnes Jewish Hospital, Central Reform Synagogue, Communities in Unity, Delancey Street Foundation, San Francisco, Diversity Summit Awareness, Ethical Society, Facing History and Ourselves, Ferguson Public Library, Gatesworth Center, Holocaust Museum and Learning Center, St. Louis, Holocaust Survivors' Group, Ladue Cares, Ladue Middle School, Lewis University, Chicago, Logos School, Nashville Community High School - Stop Hate Campaign, Nashville, IL, National Council for the Prevention of Drug and Alcohol Abuse (NCADA), North County Technical High School, Operation Respect, Rotary Club, Rutherford School, Chicago, Shaare Emeth Congregations, Sigmund Freud Museum, Vienna, St. Louis Central Library, United Nations, Vienna, University City Library, University of Missouri St. Louis School of Business, Washington University, Washington University Medical School, Webster University College of Arts and Sciences, Webster University Institute of Human Rights, Webster University School of Communications, Webster University, St. Louis, Webster University, Vienna.*Provided key participation through HateBrakers representations on two panels: St. Louis City Library - Racial Justice in a Post-Ferguson World and Ferguson & North County Youth Panel - The Holocaust Museum.
