Mission

The Foundation preserves the cultural landscape of historic Clermont Farm and uses it to promote public education and engagement with agriculture, history, and historic preservation, including the history of all the peoples associated with the site, through partnerships with regional educational organizations.

IRS990/Desc0AGRICULTURE: The Foundation uses the 360-acre Clermont Farm site and other land as a commercial beef cattle and sheep operation, which is the basis for: A) preserving intact and sustainably an historic agricultural landscape, and B.) providing an agricultural education and research program in partnership with Virginia Tech and its Middleburg Agricultural Research and Extension Center. Clermont Farm also serves as the teaching farm for the local Clarke County Public Schools (CCPS) Agriculture Program, with support from the Clarke County Farm Bureau. In 2019, the Foundation developed plans for replacement of the 1917 bank barn and 1849 corn crib destroyed in an electrical fire in November 2018, buildings which had constituted not only its animal care, hay and equipment storage space, but also its education, exhibit and archaeoldogical storage space. Plans were implemented to continue the production agriculture and educational programs temporarily without these buildings. Replacement equipment was purchased. The Foundation continued its five-year farm rejuvenation project, installing most of the remaining 40 best pasture manangement practices through NRCS EQIP cost-share projects including completion of internal re-fencing, removal of invasives and brush, planting of pollinator gardens, planting of one-half of the largest silvo-pasture research and demonstration program in Virginia, and cross-farm animal watering systems with 1.3 miles of water lines and well. The novice beekeeper training program was enlarged, and planning completed for the expansion of the experiential component of the Clarke County Public Schools' ag program from the high school down into the middle grades.

IRS990/MissionDesc0The Foundation promotes public engagement with agriculture, history, and historic preservation using the cultural landscape of Clermont Farm & the history of all the peoples associated with it, Native Americans, Africans and Europeans, who have raised and harvested crops and animals on it and created its social, economic, and military history. The Foundation's educational, research and demonstration programs are developed in partnership with Clermont Farm's owner, the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, and with local and regional partner organizations, including Virginia Tech, the Clarke County, VA Public Schools, and the Josephine School Community Museum and African American Cultural Center.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy2Grp/Desc0HISTORIC PRESERVATION: The Foundation demonstrates best historic preservation practices and conducts education programs about them for special interest groups, university students, and the general public, using the dozen historic buildings (18th and 19th centuries) above ground. Rehabilitation of and repairs to historic buildings are used not only as active opportunities for demonstrations of best practices and appropriate technologies, but also to conduct further research on and documentation of the buildings. In 2019 the Foundation completed partial dismantling of the large south porch across the 1775 house and 1788 dining building in preparation for major repairs, including completing analysis and documentation of the structure. Archaeology in and around the 1803 Smokehouse, in preparation for repairs, was completed, including the discovery of the unusually large original stone-lined fire pit, four feet in diameter. A plan was prepared for and approved by Clermont's Archaeological Advisory Committee for the archeological survey and permanent documentation of the site of the 1917 bank barn and 1849 corn crib, destroyed in the November 2018 fire. The project to complete a Phase 1 archaeological survey of Clermont's fields (330 acres) to initially identify and protect underground historic resources moved forward with its second field (#2), in which the remains of a previously unknown, possibly mid-to-late 18th century dwelling were identified and are now protected from agricultural use. The trenching for 1.3 miles of waterlines for animal waterers were archaeologically monitored and documented.

IRS990/ProgSrvcAccomActy3Grp/Desc0HISTORY: The Foundation conducts research and education programs related to the history of the farm, its regional and economic ties, and the people who have lived and worked there. The Foundation maintains archives of family papers related to the farm and collections of historic furnishings and objects. The long-term Phase 1 archaeology survey program mentioned above also supports these research and educational projects. In 2019 the Foundation presented the results of the Smokehouse archaeology project at several professional conferences. It conducted school programs for all Clarke County students studying Virginia history on the subjects of slavery, historical research based on archaeology, and the preservation of historic structures. Numerous members of the Archeological Society of Virginia (ASV) and other members of the public volunteered for work on the various projects under professional supervision, and several volunteers were mentored for the Archaeological Technician certification program of the ASV. An intial GIS map of the site was developed, which will become a basis for public education.
