Each member of the Board of Directors receives a copy of the Form 990 by email, in person, or by mail for their review prior to the filing of the Form 990 with the IRS.

Conflict of interest policy covers the Board Of Direcors and the Employees. In addition, the Board of Directors should monitor the conflict of interest policy at lease once a year or as comflicts arise.

Executive Compensation is reviewed annually by the Executive Committee, and takes into consideration generally available market data to set the compensation of the Executive Director (the only employed executive). The Executive Committee makes a recommendation to the balance of the disinterested board members, and the full board (disinterested directors) must approve the compensation as part of the annual budget process by majority vote.

The proper completion of Form 990 requires organizations to report the activity from fundraising events that substantially further the organization's exempt purpose in Part VIII, Line 8c and Form 990, Schedule G, Part II, Line 11. Fundraising events often generate both contributions and income, such as when an individual pays more than the retail value for goods or services furnished. During the year ended 2017, Space on the Farm conducted three successful fundraising events that generated contribution revenue amounting to $174,128. This contribution revenue is required to be reported on Part VIII, line 1C of the Form 990 as contributions from fundraising events per the IRS instructions. This resulted in a loss from fundraising events in the amount of $46,681 but an overall net gain of $127,447.

The Working Farm:The Working Farm is SPACEs resident writers group, offering 7 playwrights and 1 composer/lyricist a fully subsidized non-consecutive five-week residency over the course of SPACEs June-October season, in which each focuses on the creation of a new work for the theatre. Residencies are centered around three farm-fresh meals per day. In the spring following the residency, each member of The Working Farm is given the opportunity to present a public reading of the work developed at the farm in New York City for an audience of industry professionals and the general public.The Working Farm is SPACEs resident writers group, which offers a cohort of 8 playwrights, composers, lyricists or librettists a non-consecutive five-week residency on Ryder Farm, as well as full-length public readings the following spring at Playwrights Horizons in NYC. The 2017 Working Farm members were: Kevin Armento, Erin Courtney, Emily Feldman, C.A. Johnson, Ethan Lipton, Charly Simpson, Andrea Thome and Shaina Taub. In April 2017, SPACE also presented 5 readings of new plays from 2016 Working Farm playwrights Eliza Bent, Cusi Cram, Daisy Foote, Ryan King, and James Anthony Tyler.

The Family Residency:A fully subsidized and unique one-week residency founded in association with The Lilly Awards Foundation that supports working artist parents and their children. SPACE facilitates creative and nature-focused programming for the children, culminating in an informal group share. Simultaneously SPACE supports the working artist parents by creating an environment with structure time and space to create (as well as structure time and space to be with their children). This program occurs twice per season, serving 4-5 working artist parents per week. The residency is centered around three farm-fresh meals per day.The Family Residency, founded in association with The Lilly Awards Foundation, offers working parents and their children (ages 3-12) time and space to work during a one-week residency on Ryder Farm. In 2017 the program supported 12 artist-parents and 12 children with two, week-long residencies. Residents included playwright Karen Hartman and theatre historian/author Todd London, author Amy Shearn, author Terrance Flynn, Tony-award winning costume designer Linda Cho and artist Brian Chadwick, choreographer Yvonne Montoya, playwright Mary Elizabeth Hamilton, playwright Kate Fodor, visual artists Gail Biederman and Steven Millar, Obie Award-winning playwright Kirsten Greenidge and their children.

Creative Residency:Writers, theatre makers, visual artists, musicians, dancers, and artists of other disciplines take part in one-week artistic residencies at SPACE, as individuals or groups. Residencies are granted to individuals and groups that articulate a distinctive aesthetic and point of view. The residencies are fully subsidized and residents do not incur a fee. Priority is given to applications that include detailed and specific objectives for their time in residence. Residencies are centered around three farm fresh meals per day.Creative Residencies provide individuals and small groups with one or two-week residencies on Ryder Farm to create away from the stress and noise of everyday life and to be in the company of other artists and activists. The program served 62 artists in 2017 including Tony-nominated composer Dave Malloy, Pulitzer-finalist playwright Sarah DeLappe, monologist Mike Daisey, Tony-nominated choreographer Sam Pinkleton, ensemble company The Debate Society, and playwrights Jen Silverman, Aleshea Harris, Donnetta Lavinia Grays and Mike Lew.

Part X : FIN48 Footnote

Generally accepted accounting principles for Income Taxes require that a tax position be recognized or derecognized based on a "more likely than not" threshold. This applies to positions taken or expected to be taken in a tax return. The adoption of this guidance did not have an impact on SPACE's financial statements, as management believes that there are no uncertain tax positions within its financial statements. SPACE has processes presently in place to ensure the maintenance of its tax-exempt status; to identify and report unrelated income; determine its filing and tax obligations in jurisdictions for which it has nexus; and to review other matters that may be considered tax positions.SPACE's Forms 990, Return of Organization Exempt for Income Tax, for the years ended December 31, 2014, 2015, and 2016 are subject to examination by the IRS, generally for three years after they were filed.
