Mission

The program of the gloucester writers center will include a library focused on the works of and about olson, ferrini, and related writers; a residency for visiting writers; public programs including lectures, films, and discussions of the work of olson, ferrini, and others; writing workshops; and outreach to young writers and readers. Support will be solicited from foundations, government agencies and the general public.

IRS990EZ/ProgramServiceAccomplishment/DescriptionProgramServiceAccom0Our first APRIL event, Poets of all Ages 16 to 70, featured both teachers and student poets. Later in the month, Susan Deer Cloud, our first Writer-in-Residence, spoke to Charlee Bianchini and her women writers class. As part of her residency, the GWC also facilitated Susan's collaboration with the Peabody Essex Museum on a Native American program. Near month's end, the Fishtown Players put on a benefit performance for the GWC of Conor McPherson's play, The Seafarer. In MAY board member Kate Colby held her fourth Poetry Salon, featuring Cole Swensen and Julian Talamantez Brolaski. Editor, teacher and Oregon bookstore proprietor David Abel read from his new book, stay a few days. Board member Dorothy Shubow Nelson presented Readings & Conversations on War and Writing with veterans Kevin Bowen, Fred Marchant, George Kovach, Marc Levy, Martin Ray and Aldo Tambellini, as well as Helen Garland reading from her husband's last book, Unknown Soldiers. The month ended with new board member Amanda Cook hosting her second Kids' Open Mic. JUNE began with a performance by renowned artist and graphic novel writer Tony Millionaire. During the course of the month Anthony Weller read from his new novel, The Land of Later On; MacArthur Award winner Ed Sanders played guitar and read from his new book, Fug You, to a standing-room-only audience; and the Solstice brought Ken Warren's lecture, Vincent Ferrini: Dionysus in the Polis. The first event of our annual birthday celebration for Vincent and the kick-off to his Centenary year brought in more than 150 people for a theatrical happening on Gloucester Harbor. Additionally, Amanda Cook launched her program, The Garden : a poetic journal group and M. Lynda Robinson launched her10-minute play workshop. June wrapped up with Finish Line Writers Group leader Terry Weber hosting NY Times bestselling author Brunonia Barry for a reading. JULY began with choreographer and Writer-in-Residence Kate Tarlow Morgan's Proprioception workshop. Poet scholar Ammiel Alcalay then came up from CUNY to continue his work on Olson and Ferrini during his own residency. Bennington writers Patricia Sutherland and Charlotte Coe Leman read from their manuscripts in progress and William Stebbins, former Washington Bureau Chief of Aljazeera-TV, presented a talk on the Arab Spring. Finally, NYC writer/artists and Artists-in-Residence Vivien Bittencourt and Vincent Katz began a new project on Charles Olson. They will return this summer to continue the work. AUGUST brought in Audubon bird man Chris Leahy for a fascinating talk about Massachusetts wildlife. Gloucester Poet Laureate Rufus Collinson held court over a diverse group of local writers who read from their work. Writer-in-Residence Rudy Rucker presented a talk on Transrealism or Beatnik Science Fiction, and our iconic GWC graphic designer Helen Anne Lind paid us a visit. Finally, Charlee Bianchini presented 12 students from her teen and women's writing groups at a public reading at the GWC. SEPTEMBER began with 2012 Indie Reader Discovery Awards finalist Linda Hanley Finigan reading from her first novel, Love & War. Next Israeli poet, professor at Haifi University and Writer-in-Residence Shahar Bram presented a lecture called Olson in Israel, and the month closed with Boston writer Helen Epstein reading from her new memoir. In OCTOBER the GWC brought poet/activist Anne Waldman and her son Ambrose Bye to Gloucester for the 3rd Annual Charles Olson Lecture at the Cape Ann Museum. Rufus Collinson hosted another session of Poets Around Town featuring poets Amanda Cook, David Demaine, and Gloucester High School poets Pauline Cruz, Madeleine MacDougal and Elizabeth Stephens. In a collaboration with the Bookstore of Gloucester, Peter Anastas introduced his son, NY Times columnist son Ben Anastas, who read from his new memoir, Too Good to be True.
