| The Police & Working K-9 Foundation is an all-volunteer organization and we work with local communities and law enforcement agencies in California to provide safety equipment & training for K-9 teams including customized bullet-proof K9 vests, heat alarms for patrol cars, a K-9 Emergency Medicine Course & custom Cover Your K-9 Trauma kits to keep our hardworking police dogs protected while they work to protect us. We also maintain the Defenders MWD Fund to work with the Travis AFB Military Working Dog Unit & a special fund to provide emergency medical care to retired K-9s.Statement of Program Service AccomplishmentsThe Police and Working K-9 Foundation Cover Your K-9 program provides essential safety equipment & training for law enforcement K-9 teams in Northern California and we have recently started initial services to specific agencies in Southern California. We provide additional safety equipment and training to help keep our hard-working teams protected while they are out protecting their communities. Custom Cover Your K-9 Bullet-proof Vests, K-9 Heat Alarm Systems for K-9 vehicles, our Cover Your K-9 Emergency Medicine Course and K-9 Trauma Kit are some of the safety equipment & training that we provide. Our organization is staffed by volunteers with a wide variety of professional experience and expertise. The new style of Cover Your K-9 bullet-proof vest that we were able to provide last year has been very well received by law enforcement K-9 handlers. The vest, which is made in California, is custom-fit to each dog and has many advanced features such as Level IIIA ballistic panels (the highest protection available), a molle system on the side for attaching specialized cameras & GPS systems, an IR/LED beacon for visibility on land or from the air and a rappel system. We allow the agencies to choose the vest that they feel works best for their K-9 deployments and over 95% of the agencies requesting vests have asked for the vest that we helped to develop. This year we have been able to provide 81 Cover Your K9 bullet-proof vests to agencies around Northern California and we worked with Orange County Vest A Dog to allow them to provide 7 vests to K9 teams in Orange County. Agencies receiving vests include Alameda County Sheriff, BART PD, Oakland PD, San Jose PD, Sacramento PD, San Mateo County Sheriff, Concord PD, Fremont PD, San Francisco PD, Santa Clara County Sheriff, South Lake Tahoe PD, Monterey County Sheriff, Del Rey Oaks PD, Watsonville PD, San Ramon PD, Atherton PD, Belmont PD, Gilroy PD, Novato PD, Sacramento Sheriff, Merced Co Sheriff and many, many other agencies. We are proud to be able to protect so many K9 teams. Our 8 hour Cover Your K-9 Emergency Medicine course has received national recognition and has now been attended by over 675 K-9 handlers from regional police departments & sheriffs offices, the US Park Police, the FBI, the US Marshalls Service, the Federal Protective Service K9 Unit, the California Highway Patrol & the many other agencies that protect our state. The veterinary professionals volunteering their time to help this year to teach the officers have a high degree of expertise & include Dr. Lissa Richardson, Dr. Bob Lukas & Dr. Lindsey Nielsen of Sage Centers for Emergency & Specialty Care, Dr. Greg Marsolais & Dr. Bill Sullenberger of Pet Specialists of Monterey and Dr. Erin Troy of the Canine Rehabilitation Center. In addition to covering Maintenance & Care of the Working Dog, Management of Trauma, Bloat, Heat Injury, Poisoning & Drug Exposure, Rattlesnakes & other emergencies in the field, we have added a canine conditioning and rehabilitation segment. Due to the strenuous nature of their work, it is imperative that police dogs maintain a high level of conditioning and also be able to rehab successfully after an injury. In addition to the over 185 handlers from all over Northern California, we were able to host handlers from the Pasadena Police Department and the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department this year. This year we redesigned our custom Cover Your K-9 Trauma Kit to modular system with a backpack. We added the Cover Your K-9 Stat Pack, an innovative portable emergency kit we designed with the help of veterinary specialists. The Stat Pack is equipped with specialized hemostatic gauze to immediately stop bleeding and other essential emergency supplies for a K-9 handler to have right on his/her belt at all times. The biggest threat to a K-9 that has been shot or injured in the field is bleeding to death. As our Chairman, Officer Alex Jose knows from his years of experience handling two police dogs, in the field every second counts and the Cover Your Stat Pack is first line of defense for a K-9 handler to save his partner. K-9 Leco of the Soledad Police Department was saved by his partner having both the training as well at the Stat Pack on hand when he suffered a life-threatening cut to an artery in his lower leg during K-9 training. The Cover Your K-9 Trauma Kit which includes the Stat Pack & over $300 in first aid supplies is provided at no charge to K-9 handlers at our Emergency Medicine Course. This year we were able to provide 3 Cover Your K-9 Emergency Medicine Courses & provide 190 handlers with the Cover Your K9 Trauma Kits. Our K9 Vehicle Heat Alarm program is an important component that we hope to develop further next year. These Heat Alarm systems with remote pagers alert the officer in case their patrol car should overheat or become too warm. These systems are extremely important as more police dogs die of heat exhaustion than any other single cause. We were able to provide 13 agencies with these essential systems to protect their K9s this year, including Oakland PD, Sacramento Co Sheriffs Department, UC Berkeley PD, San Mateo County Sheriffs Office, Redwood City PD, Watsonville, PD, Novato PD, Fremont PD, San Leandro PD, the San Francisco Co Sheriffs Department and two to the Salinas Police Department. When a police dog retires to live at home with his officer, the veterinary care becomes the responsibility of the handler. To help with this we have a Retired K-9 Emergency Care Fund to assist with emergency care. We were able to help retired K-9 Bosco of the Rohnert Park Police Dept, retired K-9 Donna of the Danville Police Dept, retired K-9s Max and Cuda of the Oakland PD, retired K-9s Jim and Akon of the San Jose PD and retired K-9 Rico of the Contra Costa County Sheriffs Office. Each year Pet Food Express hosts our Cover Your K-9 Fundraiser weekend in July & more than 100 K-9 teams come out to their 56 locations so that the public can meet them & learn about the important jobs that they do to protect our cities. Pet Food Express donates the proceeds from the sale of wash tokens and also collects donations from the community. With their help we have been able to provide bullet-proof vests, custom K-9 Trauma Kits & Heat Alarm Systems for patrol and detection vehicles since 2009. The Retired K9 Emergency Care Fund is also funded with 10,000 each year to assist with emergency care for retired K-9s. We appreciate the partnership with Pet Food Express and see this as an excellent model for how businesses can partner with non-profits to help provide care and support in their communities. We also take donations directly from individuals and community groups on our web site and during our special events. We also appreciate the ongoing support from the dog clubs that have joined in to help out, including the San Francisco Bay Scottish Terrier Club, the Doberman Pinscher Club of Northern California, German Shepherds of the Bay Area & the many others that pitch in to help out each year. | $215,365 | - |
