IRS990EZ/ProgramServiceAccomplishment/DescriptionProgramServiceAccom0Program: Opera Performance: Riders2 + Lizbeth, was a unique and experimental production, combining three distinct performance genres in one evening: theatre, opera and music drama. The first half of the program featured John Millington Sygne's tragic play, Riders to the Sea, followed by Ralph Vaughan Williams' chamber opera, Riders to the Sea. The second half brought Thomas Albert's thrilling one-act opera, Lizbeth, to Pittsburgh for its premiere. As Vaughn Williams' opera Riders to the Sea (1927) is based almost word for word on the play (1904) by John Millington Sygne, we wondered what might happen for audiences and performers if we staged the two productions back to back. Both casts consisted of four actors or singers, the same characters. Each are about 30 minutes in length. For the sake of stylistic variety, yet many similarities in structure and story, we paired the aforementioned with a newer work, Lizbeth, a music drama in one act by Thomas Albert, libretto by Linde Hayen Herman. Lizbeth concerns the causes of the notorious axe murders that popular legend attributes to Lizzie Borden. The story opens in 1918 where a middle-aged Lizzie - now calling herself "Lizbeth" - sits alone, reminiscing with imaginary friends. As the story weaves from present to past, Lizbeth and her earlier versions, Lizzie and Young Lizzie, are forced to confront the past, ultimately leading her to remember her father's admonition to "never let your emotions stand in the way of your own peace." Lizbeth was commissioned by Shenandoah Conservatory Theatre, with support from a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. It saw its premiere at Shenandoah Conservatory, Winchester VA, in November 1976, with later revisions in 1981 and 2003. Its duration is 58 minutes, and it is written for six singers and a chamber orchestra of 12. We were very pleased to have the opportunity to work closely with composer Thomas Albert who attended opening and closing performances, giving audience members the opportunity to ask questions during a Q&A session following the opening night performance. We are very proud to inform you of an additional aspect of the project, which enabled Microscopic Opera to feature even more professional singers, who, while covering the roles of the principal singers, were able to gain professional experience and appear in their own (additional) performance. Many interesting partnerships arose from the project, including collaboration with Freya String Quartet, who comprised part of the orchestra, generous donation of rehearsal space from Carnegie Mellon University, pro-bono loan of a "wind machine" from Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, loan of several platforms from Attack Theatre, and continued support from Pittsburgh Opera, who graciously helped move and store our set. Riders2+Lizbeth took place at The Pittsburgh Opera Building, 2425 Liberty Avenue. Performances were Sept. 14, 15, 16, 20, 21 and 22, 2012, 8:00PM and Sunday 16, 7:00PM. Andres Cladera conducted the operas, with stage direction by Gregory Lehane. Tickets were $25 in advance and $35 at the door. Student / artist industry tickets were available for $15 at the door with a valid ID. We featured a Q&A with Artists, sponsored by PittArts on Friday, Sept. 14 following the performance. Our target audience for this project was 18-40 year olds, young professionals and students in the area. The attendance goal for the six shows was 600 people (100 per night), of which we reached a total of 480, yet reached an all-time record of ticket sales for one production: $10,672. Microscopic Opera engaged 43 professionals for this project.
IRS990EZ/ProgramServiceAccomplishment/DescriptionProgramServiceAccom1In March , we presented a week-long workshop, culminating in a performance on March 18 of a work in progress: Orphan Train. Orphan Train, music by Douglas Levine and libretto by Julie Tosh, is an opera for family audiences that alternates in setting between two trains: an orphan train circa 1928, and a contemporary New York City subway car. Orphan trains-sometimes known as mercy trains-were devised by social reformer Charles Loring Brace to transport homeless children from New York City to adopted homes in the Midwest. The trains operated from 1853 up until the late 1920's.The origins of the opera came from the two inspirational sources, a Kafka short story and the painting Li'l Sis by William H. Johnson. The piece evolved from a ten minute play, which explored the moment two girls realize their mother has left them on an orphan train, into a tale that traverses the past and present to examine themes of sibling love, friendship, and how individuals both young and old deal with abandonment and loss. While the backdrops of rural Texas and New York City are far from Pittsburgh, the themes and the young protagonists speak to a young Pittsburgh audience by contrasting rural and urban worlds that are far from the Pittsburgh experience. This allows the audience to make connections they may not otherwise find in a world too similar to their own. Orphan Train, which employs a fascinating though little known slice of American history, offers an engaging, multi-ethnic story suitable for middle and high school students, as well as family audiences. With a cast of 5 and what will be a small orchestration of 4 - 6 instruments, this easily produced work has strong potential to impact new audiences both in Pittsburgh and beyond. We raised $1,500 in donations directly to support programming of the piece, engaging 6 professionals. The workshop performance was seen by 60 people on March 18.
