“Cryosphere 2020: After its successful effort aimed towards Paris, ICCI began a new effort aimed at the 2018 Stocktaking Exercise and leading to the next commitment period of the Paris Agreement that will take place in 2020, aimed at the 2025-30 commitment period. ICCIs current and ex-diplomats will work closely with IPCC scientists and other researchers, as well as other NGOs active in the Arctic Council and Antarctic Treaty Mechanism, to raise especially to issue of irreversible thresholds and the need to constrain warming; with funding from Arctic 21/Woods Hole Research Center.”

“OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 4: Woodburning in Nordic Countries: Nordic Council of Ministers: Completion of a project with several Nordic testing agencies to further develop a standard means to test black carbon emissions from wood stoves together with Nordic and U.S. experts (Dr. Tami Bond in particular), including publication of the proposed Testing Protocol by the Nordic Council (see www.norden.org). OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 5: Arctic and Antarctica: ICCI continued work on a possible Arctic Council agreement to reduce black carbon; and is a member of Arctic 21, a broad coalition of U.S. NGOs to bring climate to the fore of the 2015-17 U.S. Arctic Council chairmanship. ICCI also continued efforts to raise the profile of Antarctic climate change and the risk of crossing thresholds there, in particular related to instability of West Antarctica. OTHER PROGRAM SERVICES 6: Black Carbon from Domestic Heating: ICCI began implementation of the first-ever domestic heating project from UNEP/the Climate and Clean Air Coalition, with five components: 1) global beta-testing of the Black Carbon Testing Protocol developed under the Nordic Council project; 2) decreasing black carbon from existing stoves using consumer burn right campaigns; 3) policy support for interested governments; 4) work with producers; and 5) addressing the thorny problem of combined cooking and heating in developing countries, as well as coal heating stoves. This project will run through the end of 2017.”
