Mission

The mission of veggielution is to connect people from diverse backgrounds through food and farming to build community in east san jose. Our aim is to help our east san jose neighbors experience a richness of community life and health that combats social isolation and provides the support needed to create more robust social networks and take a positive action in their community.

ALTHOUGH FIRST SATURDAY WAS PAUSED FROM APRIL 2020-APRIL 2021 DUE TO SANTA CLARA COUNTY COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS, VEGGIELUTION RESUMED THE PROGRAM WITH MODIFICATIONS IN MAY 2021 AND IN JULY 2021 WERE ABLE TO BRING IT BACK TO FULL OPERATION.GROWING AGRICULTURAL ROOTS IN EAST SIDE SAN JOS: THIS IS A MULTI-PHASE, STORYTELLING AND RECOGNITION PROJECT THAT WILL UNCOVER AND HIGHLIGHT THE STORIES AND EARLY CONTRIBUTIONS OF ASIAN IMMIGRANTS TO THE AGRICULTURAL INDUSTRY IN SANTA CLARA COUNTY. COMMON NARRATIVES OF THE EUROPEAN IMMIGRANT FARMER DO NOT FULLY DEPICT A WELL-ROUNDED HISTORY OF EARLY AGRICULTURE IN SANTA CLARA COUNTY. MUCH OF THIS INDUSTRY'S GROWTH CONTINUES TO RELY ON THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF ASIAN IMMIGRANTS-THEIR EARLY STORIES OFTEN UNTOLD AND UNSEEN. THE GOAL OF THIS PROJECT IS TO CELEBRATE AND ACKNOWLEDGE THE HISTORIES AND UNTOLD STORIES OF THIS UNDERREPRESENTED COMMUNITY. THE GOAL OF THE SOFA POCKET PARK DEMONSTRATION GARDEN IS TO CONNECT RESIDENTS, VISITORS AND FAMILIES TO FOOD GROWING AND COOKING, SUSTAINABLE GARDENING PRACTICES SUCH AS COMPOSTING AND WATER CONSERVATION, LOCAL FOOD ENTREPRENEURS & PRODUCTS, MUSEUMS AND ARTS ORGANIZATIONS, AND EACH OTHER.EASTSIDE EXPLORERS: THIS EXPERIENTIAL FIELD TRIP PROGRAM ENGAGES OVER 500 EAST SAN JOS MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS EACH YEAR THROUGH COLLABORATIVE, GROUP TASKS FOCUSED ON FOOD, AGRICULTURE, AND ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP. FOOD INSECURITY IS MORE SEVERE FOR LATINO RESIDENTS AND 3-6% HIGHER FOR HOUSEHOLDS WITH CHILDREN. FOOD SECURITY AND ACCESS ARE LIKELY TO REMAIN CHALLENGING IN EAST SAN JOS, WHICH HAS BEEN HARD-HIT BY THE PANDEMIC IN TERMS OF ECONOMIC IMPACT AND DISPROPORTIONATELY HIGH CASE NUMBERS DUE TO THE AREA'S MANY ESSENTIAL AND FRONT-LINE WORKERS, INTERGENERATIONAL HOUSEHOLDS, AND CROWDED LIVING CONDITIONS. VEGGIELUTION HAS DISTRIBUTED 9,950 BOXES SINCE MARCH 2020.FARM STAND: VEGGIELUTION'S RECENTLY RENOVATED FARM STAND PROVIDES FRESH, LOCALLY GROWN, AND AFFORDABLE PRODUCE AND LOCAL FOOD PRODUCTS TO THE COMMUNITY AND ACCEPTS ELECTRONIC BENEFITS TRANSFER (EBT) CARDS FOR CALFRESH. OPEN SATURDAYS 10 AM-2 PM, THE FARM STAND IS THE FIRST AND PRIMARY ACCESS POINT TO LEARNING ABOUT FARM ACCESS AND ACTIVITIES FOR MANY LOCAL RESIDENTS. VEGGIE VOUCHERS, A PARTNERSHIP WITH PEDIATRIC HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CENTER (PHLC) OF THE SANTA CLARA VALLEY MEDICAL CENTER, CAN BE CASHED AT THE FARM STAND, CREATING MORE ACCESS TO HEALTHY FRUITS AND VEGETABLES FOR LOW-INCOME FAMILIES. VEGGIELUTION HAS AN AVERAGE OF 1,600 TRANSACTIONS PER YEAR AT THE FARM STAND.SAN JOSE FOOD RELIEF PROJECT: IN RESPONSE TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC, VEGGIELUTION WAS SUBCONTRACTED BY OFF THE GRID, PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CITY OF SAN JOS, BEGINNING IN OCTOBER 2020 TO PACK AND DELIVER OVER 4,900 GROCERY BOXES EACH WEEK.
