| We estimate that we helped approximately 175 at-risk or in-need animals either through 1) direct services by MADN volunteers (for example, transporting dogs from Kentucky shelters where they were at risk of euthanasia to rescues in northern states with more options for foster and adoptive homes; providing TNR (trap-neuter-return) assistance to community cat colonies; caregiving and oversight for community cats; rescue and transport of ill or injured animals to veterinary care) or 2) referrals for services to other rescues or nonprofits (for example, orphaned baby kittens to a sister nonprofit with expertise in caring for and fostering neonatal kittens; ill, injured or orphaned wildlife to rehabilitators with expertise in treating and caring for the species in need; recruiting fosters and other rescues to help place animals rescued from hoarding or other dire circumstances requiring extensive care or placements). We also estimate that we helped approximately 64 people with services such as financial assistance with food or medical care for their pets, fosters, or colonies; support for families or caregivers to spay or neuter their pets or colonies; other assistance for community cat colony caregivers including providing shelters and feeding stations, lending carriers and kennels, and so forth. | $0 | $15,848 |
| Covid 19 forced the cancellation of all planned training conferences and On The Road workshops after March 2020. Fortunately, a generous donor covered the cost of videotaping our On The Road workshops on March 10, 2020, so we have been able to post those presentations online for the animal welfare community and the public at large to access at their convenience and at no cost. We have also posted presentations from our previous conferences, webinars, and other educational offerings to continue our public education mission remotely until it is safe to present in-person training again. Because of the uncertainty generated by the pandemic and its aftermath, MADN requested grant funds to cover the cost of updated educational materials for print or online distribution. We were able to print emergency stickers and wallet cards to inform first responders of pets in homes who would need care in the event of an emergency in their family; general animal welfare flyers to post in community locations to inform the public of pet overpopulation and its impacts and solutions; contact cards for volunteer recruitment, and more. | $1,300 | $3,399 |
| Covid wreaked havoc in many areas of animal welfare from 2020 - 2022, making difficult, often heartbreaking, and sometimes dangerous work even more challenging. In Kentucky, this reality is made worse by the woeful lack of laws, regulations, and enforcement in animal welfare. Kentucky ranked dead last of all 50 states in animal welfare and protection for 13 years straight. Because the animal welfare community was finally able to influence Kentucky's legislature to pass a law banning bestiality in March 2019, Kentucky moved up in the rankings from 50th to 47th. A second law granting veterinarians the right to report suspected cruelty and abuse moved us to 44th but the lack of any progress since then has placed us at our current ranking of 45th. While Kentucky no longer has the weakest animal protection laws in the country, a ranking of 45th is clearly a stain on our state. Yet every year animal advocates encourage legislators to enact common sense legislation and every year our efforts are rejected. Unable to conduct in-person events last year, MADN partnered with sister agencies to present online webinars and sessions on advocacy, supported the online presentation of Kentucky Animal Action Day 2022, and strengthened collaborative relationships and coalitions to expand public education and advocacy. Clearly much work is needed to marshal the public support required to move our legislature forward. We continue those efforts and we encourage grassroots efforts to pass local legislation as another path forward. | $0 | $1,712 |
