“Flying pig theatre - flying pig theatre academy pays homage to rodger henderson, a professional director who was a familiar presence in the midland theatre community. Flying pig classes are for preschoolers through high school age students. Students are grouped by age and come together at times to rehearse and work in mixed groups on various scenes. They begin by understanding the stories and their characters, learning stage movement and use of voice, doing improvisations and pantomine. Next, they learn more about how to set the story on stage. They plan and build the set, design make-up, costumes and wigs as well as the lights and sounds on stage which will bring the story to life. At the end of the class (several weeks) they perform for family and friends. In 2013, there were 75 participants and 20 volunteers.”
“Teacher training programs meta4, inc. Partners with instructional service teams from around the area to provide common core overview workshops, facilitate common core planning sessions and provide writing across the curriculum professional development. Participants also meet to learn and share best practices in their field, become familiar with areas of career and college readiness standards based on michigan's adoption of the common core state standards. There were 200 program participants in 2013.”
“Smart mentoring program - this is a mentoring program that partners area adult volunteers with middle school math students. The goal of the smart mentoring program is to improve students' overall confidence and performance in basic math skills. Students receive one-on-one guidance from their mentors when working on activities that involve problem solving and basic math concepts. All students in the class are paired with a mentor. The students participate in the same curriculum material as other math classes and the teachers organize the activities and time the student spends with the mentor. In 2012, there were 80 kids and 30 volunteers. Smart also supports local science olympiad teams to assist secondary students tain in competing in a variety of science events in march. The mentors have a special interest in math and science and share it to help others appreciate stems. The volunteer mentors come from a variety of backgrounds with the majority of them employed by two local chemical companies.”

FLYING PIG CLASSES ARE FOR PRESCHOOLERS THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL AGE STUDENTS. STUDENTS ARE GROUPED BY AGE AND COME TOGETHER AT TIMES TO REHEARSE AND WORK IN MIXED GROUPS ON VARIOUS SCENES. THEY BEGIN BY UNDERSTANDING THE STORIES AND THEIR CHARACTERS, LEARNING STAGE MOVEMENT AND USE OF VOICE, DOING IMPROVISATIONS AND PANTOMINE. NEXT, THEY LEARN MORE ABOUT HOW TO SET THE STORY ON STAGE. THEY PLAN AND BUILD THE SET, DESIGN MAKE-UP, COSTUMES AND WIGS AS WELL AS THE LIGHTS AND SOUNDS ON STAGE WHICH WILL BRING THE STORY TO LIFE. AT THE END OF THE CLASS (SEVERAL WEEKS) THEY PERFORM FOR FAMILY AND FRIENDS. IN 2013, THERE WERE 75 PARTICIPANTS AND 20 VOLUNTEERS. |

THE GOAL OF THE SMART MENTORING PROGRAM IS TO IMPROVE STUDENTS' OVERALL CONFIDENCE AND PERFORMANCE IN BASIC MATH SKILLS. STUDENTS RECEIVE ONE-ON-ONE GUIDANCE FROM THEIR MENTORS WHEN WORKING ON ACTIVITIES THAT INVOLVE PROBLEM SOLVING AND BASIC MATH CONCEPTS. ALL STUDENTS IN THE CLASS ARE PAIRED WITH A MENTOR. THE STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN THE SAME CURRICULUM MATERIAL AS OTHER MATH CLASSES AND THE TEACHERS ORGANIZE THE ACTIVITIES AND TIME THE STUDENT SPENDS WITH THE MENTOR. IN 2012, THERE WERE 80 KIDS AND 30 VOLUNTEERS. SMART ALSO SUPPORTS LOCAL SCIENCE OLYMPIAD TEAMS TO ASSIST SECONDARY STUDENTS TAIN IN COMPETING IN A VARIETY OF SCIENCE EVENTS IN MARCH. THE MENTORS HAVE A SPECIAL INTEREST IN MATH AND SCIENCE AND SHARE IT TO HELP OTHERS APPRECIATE STEMS. THE VOLUNTEER MENTORS COME FROM A VARIETY OF BACKGROUNDS WITH THE MAJORITY OF THEM EMPLOYED BY TWO LOCAL CHEMICAL COMPANIES. |
